The Food Safety Specialist is responsible for ensuring that all food storage, handling and transport activities across the organisation’s distribution centres and transport operations meet the highest food safety standards and comply with all relevant regulatory and customer requirements.

The role will lead the development, implementation and maintenance of food safety systems including HACCP, food hygiene standards and audit programmes, ensuring safe and compliant handling of food products throughout the logistics network.

Key Responsibilities

  • Food Safety Management
    • Lead the implementation and maintenance of food safety management systems across the business.
    • Ensure all sites operate in accordance with recognised food safety standards and company policies.
  • Auditing & Inspections
    • Conduct routine internal food safety audits and hygiene inspections across all logistics sites.
    • Identify gaps and implement corrective and preventative actions.
    • Monitor compliance with temperature control, traceability and product handling requirements.
  • Incident & Risk Management
    • Lead investigations into food safety incidents, contamination risks or product integrity issues.
    • Manage product hold, quarantine and recall procedures when required.
    • Conduct root cause analysis and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Transport & Cold Chain Integrity
    • Ensure effective control of temperature-controlled storage and transport where applicable.
    • Work with Transport Managers to ensure vehicles meet hygiene and food safety standards.
  • Training & Engagement
    • Deliver food safety training programmes to operational teams including warehouse staff, drivers and supervisors.
    • Promote high standards of food hygiene, product protection and contamination prevention.
  • Supplier & Contractor Oversight
    • Support approval and monitoring of suppliers, contractors and service providers involved in food handling or storage.
    • Ensure third-party logistics partners operate in accordance with company food safety standards.
  • Performance & Reporting
    • Monitor key food safety performance indicators including audit results, incidents and non-conformances.
    • Prepare reports and improvement plans for senior management.
    • Support continuous improvement initiatives across the logistics network.

Skills & Experience Required

  • Experience in food safety or quality management within logistics, warehousing or food distribution.
  • Strong knowledge of food safety management systems and regulatory requirements.
  • Experience implementing HACCP and hygiene controls in storage and distribution environments.
  • Experience supporting external food safety audits.
  • Ability to influence operational teams and drive compliance.

Qualifications

  • Level 4 Food Safety / HACCP qualification (or equivalent).
  • HACCP certification.
  • Degree in Food Science, Food Safety, Environmental Health or related discipline (desirable).
