The Opportunity – Level 3 Development Technician Apprenticeship

Start Date: September 2026, typically for 36 months

Starting Salary: Circa ÂŁ16,000

Minimum Entry Criteria: You’ll need at least four GCSEs or equivalent, including Maths, English and a relevant scientific/technical subject at C/4 or above.

What will a Development Technician do day to day?

  • Testing engines using state‑of‑the‑art test beds and emissions equipment.
  • Maintaining JCB products and emissions equipment to ensure accuracy and reliability.
  • Supporting the development of new and existing product designs.
  • Commissioning, building, and operating test rigs.
  • Collecting and documenting accurate test and development data to support engineers.
  • Observing test activities and identifying trends or phenomena that may not be obvious in raw data.
  • Ensuring safety for yourself, colleagues, and all equipment in the test facility.
  • Liaising with internal and external departments during projects.
  • Performing servicing, calibration, and checks to keep instrumentation ready for precise data collection.
  • Sharing learning and supporting colleagues, including monitoring unattended test cells.

What comes next?

We’ll review applications against the essential criteria and shortlist candidates for online assessments in November 2025 – January 2026. If you complete the online assessment, we’ll review it and provide an update within a few weeks. Completion of the assessment is mandatory; reminders will be sent if needed. Successful candidates will be invited to attend in‑person Assessment Centres from January to April 2026. After the Assessment Centre, regardless of outcome, you’ll receive feedback by phone. Successful candidates will then proceed to onboarding, which includes a familiarisation day. Early Careers cohorts normally start in early September.
