Due to an increase in workload and some major project wins we have exciting new opportunities for Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing (MEP) & Civil Structural & Architectural (CSA) Design Managers to join our team based on client sites across London and Home Counties with travel to other sites as required (including M3/M4 corridor).
Purpose/Main Functions of Position:
- Design management of design and build projects from inception of a scheme through to completion (RIBA Stages 0 – 7).
- Management of the design processes associated with design and build project from inception through to installation, full testing, and commissioning, proving of successful integration, demonstration, handover, sign off and training of the systems to the client and their appointed representatives.
- Ensure that statutory obligations are met in full and ensure that the business is not exposed to undue risks.
- Ensure that records, data, and systems are maintained up to date and in accordance with standards, policies, and procedures.
- Maintain excellent client relationships.
- Work with all stakeholders to identify opportunities in line with business strategy.
Job specifics
Pre- Construction Phase:
1. Be responsible for the technical accuracy and compliance of projects and contracts.
2. Engagement with stakeholders and clients to ascertain and prepare the project brief, including undertaking:
a. Options studies
b. Feasibility studies
c. Site appraisals
d. Strategic infrastructure plans.
3. Be responsible for the full design management of design and build projects from inception of a scheme through to completion (RIBA Stages 0 – 7), including:
a. Drive design with continual input to optimise design and minimize unnecessary work.
b. Developing Design Delivery Schedules and documentation including design management plans, design execution plans and BIM (Building Information Modelling) execution plans
c. Develop comprehensive scope-of-work and contract document deliverables for each discipline.
d. Negotiate scope-of-work, deliverables and price with consulting firms, commissioning managers, suppliers, and sub-contractors.
e. Support legal team with consultant appointments
f. Support QS team in developing model cost and pricing schedule.
g. Compile, monitor and manage design programmes.
h. Support QS team in management of the tender process / preparing cost analysis/budgets.
i. Lead Value engineering and opportunity reviews
j. Lead design risk identification, mitigation, and management
k. Continual technical support during the construction process including FATs (Factory Acceptance Tests) and SATs (Site Acceptance Tests)
l. Continual technical support during testing, commissioning, integrated system testing (IST) and handover procedures
4. Undertake design review and have responsibility for the overall project governance.
5. Reviewing project delivery and produce monthly reports highlighting any areas of technical risk or non-compliance and the associated mitigation measures.
6. In conjunction with the construction team undertake buildability reviews and input into design.
7. Support technical director in the preparation of fee bids.
8. Support technical director in resource planning, financial performance, and control.
9. Undertake project QA (Quality Assurance) reviews & Project peer reviews.
10. Undertake value engineering and opportunity reviews.
11. Support commissioning manager with commissioning management documentation and process.
12. Support BIM manager with project BIM management documentation and process.
13. Support and input into the overall commissioning process.
14. Support construction team and input into the overall project integrated programme and sequence of works schedules.
15. Responsibility for design health and safety procedures and documentation including review of designer risk assessments.
Construction Phase, Testing and Commissioning Phase:
1. Conduct in conjunction with design team quality control inspections on project sites during construction phase.
2. Conduct in conjunction with design team quality control inspections quality control inspections on project sites during pre-commissioning and commissioning stages.
3. Continual technical support during the construction process including FATs and SATs
4. Continual technical support during testing, commissioning, integrated system testing (IST) and handover procedures
5. Manage, co-ordinate and lead the design team’s input and close out of:
a. Site technical queries and request for information (RFI’s),
b. Construction drawing reviews.
c. Technical submittal reviews
d. Commissioning plans and commissioning scripts
e. O&M manuals including design criteria statements.
6. Input into O&M documentation from outset of project through to practical completion, including liaison with office O&M team to ensure documents are issued as per requirements in a timely and presentable manner.
7. Assist Project Engineers with compiling and populating Handover packs and other relevant QA/QC documents including inspections.
8. Assist the project team in their production of documentation and the Health & Safety File.
General
1. In addition to the duties and responsibilities listed, the jobholder is required to carry out such other duties as may be required and as may be assigned by the directors from time to time.
Qualifications and Experience
· Relevant degree level qualification in an Engineering Qualification (Architectural, Structural, Mechanical, Electrical, Building Services).
· Proven background in design management.
· Project experience in live critical working environments (data centres, pharmaceutical, laboratories, heavy industrial, etc.)
· Knowledge of the construction and engineering industry’s statutory requirements, methods, and processes.
· CSCS (Construction Skills Certification Scheme) card holder relevant to role.
· IOSH (Institution of Occupational Safety and Health) or SMSTS (Site Management Safety Training Scheme) CITB (Construction Industry Training Board) (Construction Industry Training Board) site management safety training scheme course.
· First aid at work.
· Full UK Driving licence holder.
· Willingness to travel or stay away on short term basis dependent on needs of project.
· Client facing and client management experience.
