Apprentice Water and Environment Flood Risk Management Apprentice in Bristol

We are seeking an Apprentice Water and Environment Flood Risk Management Apprentice to complete a five-year environmental IEMA accredited apprenticeship. The degree apprenticeship offers a salary while achieving a degree. Apprentices working in Environmental, Water and Sustainability teams are involved with the delivery of a wide range of projects in ecology, hydrology, catchment restoration, natural flood management, flood risk management and flood modelling.

Responsibilities

• Help deliver projects that improve river health, biodiversity and climate resilience.
• Support sustainable design solutions for clients across public, private and third sectors.
• Contribute to flood risk reduction, catchment restoration and environmental protection, applying complex environmental principles and methods to projects that integrate with the built or natural environment.
• Design, develop or manage safe and sustainable environmental solutions, identify challenges these solutions pose, and assess opportunities to deliver practical solutions that integrate with the built or natural environment.
• Balance views of potentially conflicting drivers related to environmental, social and financial constraints, and demonstrate critical analysis in the design, development or management of environmental projects.
• Apply and comply with policies and regulations relating to the environment, health and safety, legal, planning and equality and diversity, and with the organisation's procedures and practices.
• Determine and manage the collection, analysis and evaluation of data used in the development or delivery of environmental solutions, drawing appropriate conclusions and making practical recommendations.
• Apply, analyse and evaluate a broad range of environmental methods (utilising appropriate software and digital solutions) to inform and enable decision making; assess data suitability, validity, quality and accuracy relative to its intended application.
• Manage tasks or projects within environmental, legal, contractual and statutory requirements to agreed time and resource budgets and quality standards, using appropriate project management tools and techniques.
• Deliver high quality, accurate, well-structured documents and recommendations for the work and audiences concerned.
• Develop and maintain productive working relationships with stakeholders and colleagues; support and guide team members to achieve team and personal objectives; seek and provide feedback and manage conflicts with integrity and fairness.
• Communicate effectively orally and in writing in formal and informal contexts with a variety of stakeholders; listen actively to ensure others' views are considered.
• Manage own work independently within the limits of ability, authority and responsibility; seek feedback to improve performance.
• Develop professional competence through CPD, maintaining an extended network to support development and uphold professional ethics and codes of conduct associated with the environmental profession.

Qualifications

• Environmental practitioner (Degree) Apprenticeship Standard (Bsc Environmental Science).
• Apprenticeship training provided by The University of the West of England.
• GCSE requirements in English and Maths (grades 9-4 / A*-C as applicable).
• A Levels: typical requirements (e.g., B grades) as applicable; adjustments may reflect prior knowledge.
• Communication skills, IT skills, attention to detail, organisation, problem solving, and teamwork.

• The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect prior knowledge.
• Start date: Tuesday 1 September 2026.
• Duration: 4 years 5 months.
• Hours: standard 37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday.
• Salary: £21,220 per year (information may be subject to the National Minimum Wage and age bands).
• Location: JBA offices; agile working available where appropriate.
