JBA Consulting are looking for a motivated and committed individual to join our Marine and Coastal Risk Management group (MCRM) in our Skipton office. You will be joining an award-winning environmental and engineering consultancy which puts innovation, sustainability and resilience at the heart of its work. We are independent and staff-owned under a stewardship model which drives long term decision making and investment. We have offices in the UK, Ireland, Romania, India, Singapore and Australia. The role will involve delivering a variety of coastal modelling and forecasting projects. Key tasks of this role will include:
- Application of numerical and machine learning models to support consultancy and research projects.
- Analysis of data to solve problems.
- Analysis and interrogation of model outputs.
- Production of technical reports.
The successful candidate will be trained in all aspects of coastal modelling, from the derivation of data, data processing, building numerical models, applying machine learning models and analysis of results to derive technical solutions to solve coastal hazard problems. They will support senior colleagues through management and delivery of projects to meet client requirements. Enthusiasm and drive are essential, with the candidate being expected to contribute to the wider objectives of the MCRM group.
Candidates must have the following:
- A Bachelors, Masters or PhD degree (or equivalent) in a relevant subject (e.g. Oceanography, Physical Sciences, Engineering).
- An understanding of coastal hydrodynamics and hazards.
- An interest in applying numerical models to assess coastal hazards.
We are looking for a candidate who has an interest in the coast and environmental issues that coastal communities are facing. Your role will involve handling of data to solve problems and working within constraints of time and budgets to deliver multiple projects. If you already have experience then there will be opportunities to lead and manage projects.
Candidates will be able to demonstrate that they are able to:
- Work collaboratively within a team, with regard to deadlines and budget.
- Communicate effectively, both verbal and written.
- Be proactive and creative in applying models to predict coastal hazards.
- Take responsibility for independent project delivery.
- Follow Quality Assurance processes.
- Be flexible and open to innovation and the application of new technology.
- Become proficient in the use of industry standard coastal hazard models (e.g. SWAN, TUFLOW, EurOtop, TELEMAC etc.).
- Be open to learning and gaining knowledge to work towards a specialism within the team.
Desirable skills and experience are:
- Experience using GIS products.
- Data analysis skills in Matlab, python or R.
- Experience delivering FCERM projects in the UK or internationally.
- Experience in statistical and extreme value modelling.
- Experience in coastal hazard, sediment transport or contaminant modelling.
- Experience in coastal flood and erosion risk consultancy.
The role will be in our modern, eco-friendly offices at Broughton Park, near Skipton, North Yorkshire, BD23 3FD and includes ample free parking and EV charging points.
