Salary: £Competitive
Location: Various
We are seeking key team members, especially in the north of England and Scotland, who can proactively influence environmental outcomes from project inception through to completion. The role requires technical expertise and practical delivery experience to mitigate environmental impacts, promote sustainability, and achieve regulatory compliance.
Across infrastructure projects, environmental requirements are typically well defined, understood, and documented. The challenge lies in ensuring that those requirements are translated into decisions that are proportionate, practical and deliverable during both design and construction.
We are looking for skilled professionals who work effectively within multidisciplinary teams and ensure that environmental considerations are identified and applied in ways that improve project outcomes. This involves engaging early, influencing decisions as they are formed.
You will be joining an award‑winning environmental and engineering consultancy that puts innovation, sustainability and resilience at the heart of its work. We are independent and staff‑owned under a stewardship model which drives long‑term decision making and investment. We have offices in the UK, Ireland, Romania, India, Singapore and Australia. JBA supports hybrid working which provides greater flexibility with the way that we work.
Our people are important and we invest heavily in lifelong learning and skills development. We are always on the lookout for talented, committed and inspiring people to join us in our ambition to lead in the pursuit for resilience to climate change. In return, we offer rewarding careers with continued opportunities and dedicated support for personal development. Build your career with us and help us to build a more resilient future.
The Role
You will operate at the interface between environmental assessments and project delivery, working closely with engineers, designers and project teams across the project lifecycle. In practice this means understanding how environmental risks and constraints affect design choices, construction methods, programmes and ensuring that responses are aligned with the realities of delivery. The emphasis is on ensuring these translate into actions that can be implemented effectively on the ground.
A key aspect of the role is shaping how teams approach environmental requirements. This includes supporting designers in integrating mitigation into core design decisions, rather than relying on secondary measures.
You will also support or coordinate multidisciplinary environmental input, helping to align different technical perspectives into coherent, proportionate solutions. This requires not only technical understanding but also the judgement to decide where effort is best focused and how to balance environmental priorities alongside cost, programme and constructability.
The Team Member We Are Looking For
We are less concerned with a specific academic or professional route and more interested in how you operate within project environments. You are likely to have experience in infrastructure, engineering, environmental or related disciplines. You will have a strong understanding of the natural world as well as environmental principles and regulatory frameworks, and you will be able to apply this knowledge pragmatically within real project constraints.
You are naturally inquisitive but grounded, able to understand complexity without overcomplicating decisions. You are comfortable engaging with engineers, designers and delivery teams, and able to contribute credibly to discussions on design, buildability and implementation.
You will be confident in challenging where appropriate, not simply identifying issues, but helping teams work through them to reach solutions. You will take ownership of challenges ensuring that environmental considerations are delivered.
Essential Attributes For The Role
- Technical expertise, practical judgement and a problem‑solving approach.
- The ability to interpret technical information and translate it into clear, practical and actionable advice.
- Experience working in or alongside design and construction environments, especially where this involves engaging with real delivery constraints.
- Effective communication, organisational ability and confidence in working with multiple stakeholders.
Desirable Attributes For The Role
- Experience identifying and assessing environmental and ecological risks, contributing to environmental management approaches or supporting compliance processes.
- Familiarity with environmental management systems, monitoring or auditing processes and a broad awareness of the physical environment and environmental disciplines.
- Professional accreditation with ISEP, preferably CEnv, or with another relevant professional body would be advantageous.
