My client are a leading designer and manufacturer of packaging for the UK retail market. For the last 4 decades, this business has been at the forefront of innovation, sustainability, and manufacturing processes within their sector. We are looking for an experienced Tool Design Engineer to take ownership of the design, development, and commissioning of thermoformed production tools. This role requires a hands-on leader capable of supervising the Tool Design Team, driving technical excellence, improving processes, and collaborating across departments to ensure high-quality production outcomes.
Your day-to-day responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
- Work alongside Tool Room staff when necessary to support workflow and meet deadlines.
- Take ownership of developing approved concepts into fully manufacturable thermoformed production tools.
- Lead the standardisation of new and existing tool designs, including auxiliary components.
- Research, develop, and improve tooling solutions, materials, and methods.
- Challenge costing matrices prior to designing each tool set to identify efficiency improvements.
- Specify tooling and accessories to external subcontractors as required.
- Troubleshoot new tool commissioning to reduce setup times and minimise downtime.
- Ensure all materials and components for tool manufacture and assembly are ordered and delivered on time.
- Provide the CNC Department with complete tool packs, including checklists, bills of materials, and relevant technical information.
- Review and implement tooling improvements suggested by Production and Planning teams.
- Work collaboratively with management and staff to improve teamwork, communication, and achievement of company goals.
Ideally you will have 3-5 years’ experience in a similar role within the manufacturing sector, preferably in a thermoforming or injection moulding environment. You will have qualifications in either a vocational or engineering focused discipline, and have strong knowledge of CNC processes, tooling materials, and production. You will possess excellent communication skills, and be able to work collaboratively across multiple departments. As this is a leadership role, you will need to be able to demonstrate a commitment to continuous improvement and leading a small team.
