Join Our Growing Team at Jarvie Plant! We are excited to offer the opportunity for a motivated Central Hire Desk Manager to join our team, based at our Edinburgh (Newbridge) Head Office.

In this role, you’ll play a key part in leading our central hire desk operations, ensuring the efficient coordination of plant, operators, and customer requirements across the business. You’ll oversee day‑to‑day hire activity, support your team, and work closely with depots, drivers, and customers to deliver a seamless and reliable hire experience. You’ll act as a central point of leadership within the hire function, ensuring enquiries are managed effectively, resources are optimised, and service levels consistently meet customer expectations across both self‑drive and operated hire.

As a Central Hire Desk Manager, you will ensure the smooth coordination of resources to deliver safe, efficient, and high‑quality hire solutions to our customers. Your leadership will directly impact plant utilisation, operational efficiency, revenue performance, and customer satisfaction—ensuring we continue to provide dependable and responsive hire services across all depots.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Leading the day‑to‑day operations of the central hire desk, ensuring enquiries, orders, and off‑hires are managed efficiently and professionally
  • Allocating plant and operators to maximise utilisation and meet customer requirements
  • Overseeing operated hire planning, ensuring programmes are delivered with appropriately qualified (CPCS/NPORS) operators
  • Acting as an escalation point for complex queries, resolving issues promptly and maintaining strong customer relationships
  • Supporting and developing the hire desk team, providing guidance, coaching, and performance oversight
  • Deputising where required and contributing to wider operational decision‑making
  • Monitoring and improving system accuracy, ensuring all hire activity is recorded correctly and supports effective reporting
  • Driving revenue growth through proactive management of availability, utilisation, and customer opportunities
  • Ensuring compliance with all operational, safety, and competency requirements across hire activity
  • Working collaboratively with depot teams, transport, and operations to deliver a seamless service
  • Identifying opportunities to improve processes, systems, and ways of working across the hire function

We’d love to see the following skills and experience from our applicants:

  • Proven experience in a hire desk, customer service, or operational management role (plant hire or a similar fast‑paced environment preferred)
  • Strong leadership and people management experience, with the ability to motivate and develop a team
  • Excellent planning and coordination skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet tight deadlines
  • A customer‑focused mindset, with a commitment to delivering high levels of service
  • Strong communication skills, confident dealing with colleagues, customers, and depot teams
  • Commercial awareness, with the ability to maximise utilisation and support revenue growth
  • Good working knowledge of hire systems and Microsoft Office (particularly Excel and Outlook)
  • A problem‑solving approach, with the ability to make decisions quickly and effectively
  • High attention to detail and a focus on accuracy in all aspects of work
