Deputy Head of Legal & Insurance – Maritime

London | Full-time | Office-based

Ready to step up and be the go‑to leader on complex marine claims in a global shipping business?

This Deputy Head of Legal & Insurance role puts you at the centre of high-value, international maritime operations, leading a specialist team and deputising for the Head of Legal (Maritime) & Insurance.

The Role

  • Take day-to-day ownership of high-volume, complex P&I, marine liability and hull claims, driving efficient, cost-effective resolutions aligned with business strategy.
  • Act as second-in-command to the Head of Legal (Maritime) & Insurance, providing leadership, mentoring and structure to a dedicated claims team.
  • Lead on reporting, trend analysis and performance metrics, turning claims data into actionable insight for senior management.

Where You’ll Be Working

  • London HQ in modern, open-plan offices, embedded in a high-performing, results-oriented and forward-thinking maritime environment.
  • Part of a large, diversified global fleet operation, collaborating daily with internal teams and external stakeholders across multiple jurisdictions.

Key Accountabilities

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with internal stakeholders and external partners including P&I Clubs, insurers, law firms and surveyors.
  • Support departmental strategy and continuous improvement of claims handling processes, procedures and reporting.
  • Identify risk issues from claims experience and work with other divisions on risk management and loss prevention initiatives.

What You’ll Bring

  • Significant (c. 10–15 years) shipping law & marine insurance claims experience, ideally from a P&I Club or shipowner/operator, with a track record of handling complex, high-value matters.
  • Deep knowledge of maritime law, P&I rules, charter parties and dispute resolution.
  • Proven leadership capability, strong negotiation and communication skills, and the ability to stay calm, organised and decisive in a fast-paced environment.
  • High level of IT proficiency, including Microsoft Office and claims management systems.
