Work hours: Monday to Thursday 08:00–16:00, Friday 08:00–13:00.

With state-of-the-art skills in materials technology, particularly relating to elastomers, polymers, composites and engineering plastics plus extensive expertise in precision machining of exotic alloys for metallic seals, and tension control fasteners for bolted joints.

Your Role: As the Site Electrical Engineer you will lead and control all aspects of electrical safety, statutory compliance, and engineering governance across the James Walker Cockermouth site. You will act as the Senior Authorised Person (SAP) and Electrical Duty Holder (EDH) under the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 (EAWR), ensuring that all electrical systems are installed, maintained, and operated safely. This is a statutory, high-accountability role providing both technical leadership and legal compliance oversight for the site’s electrical infrastructure, projects, and maintenance teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Statutory & Regulatory Compliance: Maintain and regularly review the Electrical Safety Rules and Authorisation Matrix. Act as the Responsible Engineer for the site’s High Voltage (HV) electrical network, including management of the COMA electrical safety arrangements and liaison with the external Distribution Network Operator (DNO) and COMA site representative. Maintain oversight of the HV COMA agreement, ensuring inspections, switching, and maintenance activities are controlled in accordance with the site’s COMA safety case and EAWR requirements. Coordinate HV system maintenance, isolations, and contractor works in collaboration with the authorised HV service provider.
  • Electrical Safety Management: Serve as the Senior Authorised Person (SAP) controlling electrical work, permits, and isolations. Approve and issue Electrical Permits-to-Work (PTW), LOTO. Lead investigations into any electrical incident or near miss and implement corrective actions.
  • Technical Oversight & System Integrity: Provide expert technical guidance on electrical distribution, control, automation, and machine safety systems. Review electrical designs, specifications, and contractor RAMS for projects and maintenance.
  • Competence, Training & Authorisation: Develop & Maintain the Electrical Training & Competency Matrix (SQEP Framework). Mentor and technically support maintenance electricians and apprentices. Provide toolbox talks, technical briefs, and updates to keep the workforce compliant and informed.
  • Projects, Modifications & Contractor Control: Review electrical elements of CAPEX projects for compliance and safe design. Support the Project Team.
  • Documentation & Record Management: Maintain all statutory electrical documentation. Ensure controlled document storage in SharePoint / Engineering Drive per site document control procedure.

About you

Skill & Experience:

  • Industrial / Manufacturing Environment Electrical Duty Holder / SAP Role - Previous experience acting as Senior Authorised Person or Senior Electrical Engineer with compliance accountability.
  • Team & Contractor Supervision - Experience managing electrical personnel and external contractors.
  • Auditing & Compliance Management - Proven track record of implementing or auditing electrical safety frameworks.
  • Project Support & Design Review - Experience contributing to electrical project scopes, design reviews, and commissioning.

Qualifications

Essential Qualifications:

  • Level 3 NVQ / City & Guilds 2357, 2365, or equivalent
  • LV Authorisation (BS EN 50110 compliant)
  • IOSH Managing Safely or equivalent
  • Wiring Regulations - BS 7671:2018 (18th Edition, latest amendment)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • HNC / HND in Electrical or Control Engineering
  • ECS Gold Card
  • NEBOSH General / Technical Certificate
  • EAWR & HSG85-specific training
  • Awareness or willingness to undertake HV Authorised Person (11kV) training and COMA electrical network management training.
