Dispensary Assistant (Approx. 30 Hours per Week)

James Street Family Practice is a busy, friendly and forward-thinking GP training practice, and were looking for an enthusiastic and motivated individual to join our dedicated dispensary team.

This is a varied and rewarding role where youll play an important part in providing a high-quality dispensing service to our patients.

Working closely with GPs, nurses and the wider practice team, you'll help ensure our patients receive safe, efficient and compassionate care.

Main duties of the job

Working as part of our friendly and dedicated dispensary team, you will support the safe and efficient dispensing of medication to our dispensing patients.

The role includes processing prescriptons, preparing and dispensing medicines in accordance with legal and practice procedures, managing pharmaceutical stock, responding to patient enquiries, liasing with clinicians and community pharmacies, and maintaining accurate records using Systm One.

You will also contribute to the smooth day-to-day running of the dispensary while providing an excellent, patient-centred service and working collaboratively with the wider practice team.

James Street Family Practice is a successful and dynamic training practice, providingservices to approx 13'500 patients in Louth, Lincolnshire.

We are a training practice for Registrars, Student Nurses and Medical Students and are also a Research-Ready practice playing an active part in research projects.

The following are the core responsibilities of the dispenser, but not exclusive.

There may be on occasion, a requirement to carry out other tasks; this will be dependent upon factors such as workload and staffing levels:

  • Dispensing acute and repeat prescription requests.
  • Checking colleagues' dispensing.
  • Updating patients' repeat screens on Doctors instructions.
  • Ensuring the dispensary area remains clean and tidy
  • Handing our prescriptions and ollecting xharges when appropriate.
  • Sorting, stamping and endorsing prescriptions.
  • Completing backs of prescriptions.
  • Ordering appropriate quantities of goods via the wholesaler's computer link.
  • Checking goods as and when delivered and returning incorrect goods as required.
  • Stocking shelves, refrigerators and other storage areas.
  • Disposal of returned unused medicines.
  • Effectively manage and place purchase orders received from wholesaling distributors.
  • Cross reference invoices with goods received.
  • Appropriately repackage supplies and relabel.
  • Check ambience and temperatures of room and record accordingly.
  • Keep a close eye on any Drug Alerts and manage any affected batches accordingly.
  • Adhere to manual of operating for wholesaling.
  • Checking for the addition/removal/alteration of any medication changes and passing to pharmacist/GP/Prescriber for amendment.

Person Specification

Qualifications

  • BTEC/NPA qualification in Dispensing or similar standard of training (i. e. NVQ).
  • Must be numerate and literate.
  • Manner pleasant and professional.
  • Previous stock and quality control experience.
  • Used to handling and reconciling cash.
  • Able to work on own initiative, following set procedures and protocols. Demonstrate an understanding and commitment to good standards of patient care.
  • Flexible, reliable and responsive to change.
  • An understanding, acceptance, and adherence to the need for strict confidentiality.
  • Ability to use own judgement, resourcefulness and common sense. Ability to work under pressure.
  • Concentration required daily, e. g. ability to deal with occasional exposure to distressing or emotional events.
  • Ability to work with competing priorities.
  • Ability to deal tactfully and empathetically with distressed or anxious patients and carers.
  • Ability to communicate effectively via telephone or group discussion. Good interpersonal skills.
  • Proven customer care skills.
  • Flexible attitude to working hours, and able to cover staff sickness at short notice.
  • Experience of NHS systems.
  • Experience of Systm One clinical system.
  • Experience of working within Primary Care.
  • An enquiring mind, with a willingness to learn new skills and procedures. Able to deal with challenging situations.
  • Ability to work without direct supervision and determine own workload priorities.
  • Self motivating - able to work with minimal direction but aware of limits of authority.
