This is a role for someone who sits between technical engineering, pre‑construction and winning work. You might be an electrically biased engineer who understands data centre environments and wants to move further into bids, proposals and client‑facing technical work. Or you may already be in a sales engineering role but want to be closer to complex technical solutions rather than purely commercial sales. This is not a transactional role. You will be helping shape technical responses, build commercially strong submissions and support the business in securing major data centre projects where accuracy, buildability and client confidence are critical.
The business operates in the data centre sector, delivering technical infrastructure, M&E installation, connectivity, manufacturing, security, critical cleaning and managed service solutions. The work is fast‑moving, detailed and built around clients who expect clear, technically credible answers.
The Role
You will take responsibility for producing technical and commercial proposals across data centre opportunities, working closely with senior leadership, engineering teams, commercial teams and the supply chain. A major part of the role will be understanding the client’s requirements, identifying the right technical solution and making sure the final submission is accurate, competitive and clearly differentiated. You will be involved from early engagement through to final tender review, helping shape the win strategy, review costs, challenge assumptions, manage risk and ensure the proposed solution can be delivered. Once work is secured, you will support the handover into delivery, making sure project teams understand the scope, design intent, pricing, supplier input and client expectations from day one.
What You Will Be Doing
- Preparing technical and commercial proposals for data centre projects and associated M&E services.
- Working with senior management to identify strong opportunities and convert them into secured work.
- Developing bid strategies that separate the business from competitors through technical understanding, service quality and delivery confidence.
- Reviewing enquiry documents, specifications, drawings, supplier input and estimates to make sure submissions are accurate and realistic.
- Coordinating input from internal departments, specialist teams and external suppliers.
- Presenting tender values, risks, opportunities and commercial assumptions during final reviews.
- Building strong relationships with clients, consultants, internal teams and the supply chain.
- Supporting project handovers and acting as a technical point of contact where required.
- Representing the business at client meetings, industry events and project discussions.
What You Will Need
- A strong M&E background, ideally with an electrical bias.
- Good knowledge of data centres or other technically demanding building services environments.
- The ability to understand drawings, specifications, technical requirements and commercial information.
- Experience supporting tenders, bids, estimates, proposals, pre‑construction or client‑facing technical work.
- Commercial awareness, including cost, margin, risk, opportunity and value engineering.
- Confidence dealing with clients, senior stakeholders, engineers, commercial teams and suppliers.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to turn technical detail into a clear, persuasive submission.
- Good IT ability, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and related bid or project tools.
- Relevant industry qualifications, cards or certifications appropriate to the role.
Why This Role Stands Out
The data centre market remains one of the strongest areas in building services, but good sales engineers in this space are rare. This role gives you exposure to major opportunities, senior decision makers and technically complex work without moving fully away from engineering. You will use your technical knowledge commercially, influence how projects are won and become a key part of the front end of the business. For someone with an electrical background who enjoys detail, problem‑solving, client interaction and the commercial side of projects, this is a very strong move.
The Offer
Circa £75,000 plus package. London-based. Five days a week in the office. Permanent position with long‑term scope in the data centre sector.
