James Lambeth Recruitment is working with leading civil engineering and infrastructure contractors to appoint a Construction Environmental Planner to support the effective planning, permitting, and delivery of environmentally responsible construction works. This role is ideal for someone who understands how environmental constraints translate into practical site controls and wants to play a key part in shaping compliant, sustainable project delivery.

The Role

You will act as the link between design, environmental specialists, and site delivery teams ensuring environmental requirements are identified early, planned correctly, and implemented effectively on live projects. From pre-construction through to completion, you will embed environmental best practice across methodologies, sequencing, and site operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Environmental Screening & Risk Identification: Assess project information to identify constraints such as habitats, protected species, heritage assets, contamination, hydrology, and sensitive receptors.
  • Environmental Planning: Define mitigation measures, site controls, and monitoring strategies, integrating environmental requirements into construction methodologies and programme planning.
  • Permitting & Consents: Prepare and coordinate environmental permits and licences (e.g. FRAP, Marine Licences, protected species licences), liaising with regulators and specialist consultants.
  • Environmental Management Plans: Produce and maintain CEMPs and supporting documentation in line with project and regulatory requirements.
  • Site Support & Implementation: Deliver briefings, toolbox talks, and inspections to ensure environmental controls are understood and implemented on site.
  • Monitoring & Reporting: Define monitoring requirements, interpret environmental data, and produce clear, compliant reports.
  • Stakeholder Coordination: Work closely with internal teams, subcontractors, and environmental specialists to align environmental requirements with construction activities.
  • Compliance & Assurance: Ensure adherence to environmental legislation, planning conditions, and company management systems.
  • Incident Management: Support investigations and implement corrective and preventive actions.
  • Continuous Improvement: Contribute to improved environmental performance through lessons learned and best practice sharing.

Skills & Experience

  • 3-5 years experience in an environmental role within construction, civils, infrastructure, or consultancy.
  • Strong understanding of environmental risks, constraints, and mitigation.
  • Working knowledge of UK environmental legislation, planning requirements, and permitting regimes.
  • Experience producing CEMPs and supporting environmental documentation.
  • Confident supporting site teams and embedding environmental controls on live projects.
  • Experience with infrastructure, marine, or environmentally sensitive projects is desirable.

Technology & Qualifications

  • Proficient in Microsoft 365; familiarity with GIS or environmental data systems beneficial.
  • Experience with CDEs such as Procore or Aconex desirable.
  • Degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Management, or related discipline.
  • Practitioner-level IEMA/ISEP (or working towards).
  • Full UK driving licence and CSCS card required.
