An urgent opportunity has opened for a BESS Electrical Engineer to support a live battery energy storage project that is now entering a critical final design and commissioning phase. The project has already been through delays and now needs an experienced BESS specialist who can step in quickly, take ownership of the remaining electrical design work, resolve final technical issues and help drive the project through to delivery.

This is a remote outside IR35 contract with occasional site visits to Scotland, an immediate start preferred, and genuine potential for extension or a permanent role afterwards. For the right Senior BESS Electrical Engineer, there is the likelihood for contract extension and/or a permanent opportunity after the initial assignment. This is not a routine design-office role. It is a live, high-priority BESS project where your electrical design and commissioning experience will make an immediate impact.

You will be joining at the point where the project needs someone capable, calm and technically strong to pull the remaining design together, support EPC delivery and help move the battery storage project through commissioning.

This role would suit a senior electrical engineer with BESS (Battery Energy Storage System) commissioning experience, BESS engineer, battery storage engineer, energy storage engineer or electrical design engineer with strong hands-on experience across BESS design, battery energy storage systems, final design, commissioning, EPC coordination, MV infrastructure, transformers, earthing and grid connection.

THE ROLE:

As the Senior BESS Electrical Engineer, you will take ownership of electrical design and delivery support across live battery storage projects. You will review existing designs, identify gaps, issue clear technical work packs and help contractors, EPC partners and project teams complete the remaining work safely and correctly.

You will be involved in:

  • Completing final electrical design work for BESS / battery energy storage projects.
  • Reviewing and updating drawings, schematics, cable schedules, settings, specifications and technical documents.
  • Supporting BESS commissioning, energisation, testing and final handover activity.
  • Working across battery systems, transformers, MV / medium-voltage infrastructure, earthing and grid connection interfaces.
  • Producing clear work specifications for EPC partners, contractors and site teams.
  • Resolving technical design changes during the final delivery and commissioning phase.
  • Supporting project managers, suppliers, contractors and stakeholders with clear electrical engineering guidance.
  • Occasional attendance onsite in Scotland when required to support commissioning, contractor queries and final delivery.

SKILLS & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • UK commissioning experience, ideally on BESS, substations, renewables or MV power projects.
  • Experience with final design, detailed design, design review or design assurance.
  • Ability to read, review and produce electrical schematics, wiring diagrams and technical work packs.
  • AutoCAD experience.
  • Ability to work remotely, independently and take ownership from day one.
  • Strong BESS, battery storage or energy storage project experience.
  • Electrical design experience across power infrastructure, renewables, utilities or generation.
  • Good understanding of MV systems, medium-voltage installations, transformers, earthing and grid connections.
  • Experience working with EPCs, contractors, DNOs, utilities or grid-connection stakeholders.

DESIRABLE – Skills & Experience:

  • PSCAD or other power simulation software.
  • Behind-the-meter BESS or battery-on-site projects.
  • Transformer sectioning, protection settings, commissioning plans or energisation support.
  • AC/DC electrical design.
  • Cable schedules, BOMs, tender packs, work packs or contractor specifications.
  • Owner’s engineer, project engineer, commissioning engineer or senior electrical design engineer background.
