Join one of the UK’s leading privately owned consultancies at a pivotal moment in their growth. This UK national, a 500-strong, multidisciplinary engineering consultancy, is looking for an experienced and well-connected Technical Director/Lead – Rail to strengthen their Civils/Structures team in Glasgow and drive forward their rail offering across Scotland and beyond.

About the Role

As Technical Director/Lead – Rail, you will lead the civil and structural design elements of rail projects across Scotland, acting as a key figure in both project delivery and business development. With deep knowledge of the rail sector and the Scottish infrastructure market, you’ll be instrumental in growing their footprint in the industry.

You’ll lead and mentor a team of engineers, oversee technical delivery across multiple active rail projects, and engage with contractors, design partners, and clients. You’ll also help expand the company\’s influence south of the border and build stronger relationships with key players in the wider UK rail market.

Key Responsibilities

Lead the technical delivery of rail projects (civil/structural focus)

Act as a focal point for client liaison, business development, and bid writing

Mentor and support the engineering team, contributing to training and growth

Build and maintain relationships with key rail clients in Scotland and grow relationships further across England

Collaborate closely with other internal teams (geotechnical, water, structures) to deliver multidisciplinary solutions

About You

Chartered Engineer (CEng) with a background in civil or structural engineering

Extensive experience in the rail sector, ideally within consultancy or major contractor environments

Strong network of industry contacts in Scotland and working knowledge of UK-wide contractors

Comfortable managing multiple smaller-scale projects simultaneously, rather than long-term single megaprojects

Experience working with or alongside organisations like Network Rail, Story, AMCO, QTS, etc.
