We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Principal Bridge Engineer to join our expanding infrastructure team in Glasgow. This is a senior technical and leadership role responsible for delivering bridge and civil structures projects across transportation, highways, rail and local authority sectors. The successful candidate will lead multidisciplinary design teams, provide technical excellence throughout project delivery, and support business growth through client engagement and project development activities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Technical Leadership
    • Lead the design, assessment and delivery of bridge and civil structures projects from concept through to construction.
    • Undertake and oversee structural analysis, detailed design and checking activities for new and existing bridge assets.
    • Provide technical guidance and mentoring to engineers, graduates and technicians.
    • Act as Lead Designer and Design Checker in accordance with company procedures and project requirements.
    • Ensure compliance with relevant standards including DMRB, Eurocodes, Network Rail standards and local authority requirements.
    • Manage bridge inspections, assessments, strengthening and rehabilitation schemes.
    • Review calculations, drawings, specifications and technical reports to ensure quality and consistency.
  • Project Management
    • Manage project programmes, budgets and resource allocation.
    • Coordinate multidisciplinary project teams and liaise with clients, contractors and key stakeholders.
    • Monitor project progress and ensure successful delivery against scope, programme and financial targets.
    • Support bid preparation, fee proposals and framework opportunities.
    • Identify project risks and develop mitigation strategies.
  • Business Development
    • Maintain and develop strong client relationships.
    • Support framework delivery and identify opportunities for repeat business.
    • Contribute to strategic growth initiatives within the bridges and structures sector.
    • Represent the business at meetings, industry events and professional forums.

Candidate Requirements

  • Degree qualified in Civil or Structural Engineering.
  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) status with an appropriate professional institution.
  • Significant experience in bridge engineering consultancy, ideally 10+ years.
  • Proven experience delivering bridge design, assessment and refurbishment projects.
  • Strong understanding of DMRB, Eurocodes and bridge design standards.
  • Experience working with transport agencies, local authorities or rail clients.
  • Demonstrable leadership and project management capability.
  • Excellent communication, client-facing and stakeholder management skills.
  • Ability to mentor and develop junior staff.

Desirable

  • Experience delivering projects for Transport Scotland, local authorities or rail infrastructure clients.
  • Knowledge of BIM processes and digital engineering methodologies.
  • Familiarity with finite element analysis software and bridge assessment tools.
  • Experience acting as CRE, CEM or equivalent rail assurance roles.
  • Existing client relationships within the Scottish infrastructure market.

Salary Guide

£55,000 – £75,000+ per annum, depending on experience, chartership status and sector expertise.
