Assistant Payroll Manager
Salary: Up to £45,000 + discretionary bonus
Location: Harrow, London
Hybrid: 3 days office / 2 days home
Contract: Permanent, Full-Time
The Role
An opportunity for an experienced bureau payroll professional to join an established accountancy practice as the number two to the Payroll Manager.
This is a senior, hands-on processing role with responsibility for a portfolio of approximately 500 client payrolls, predominantly smaller businesses with 1–50 employees.
Key Responsibilities
Manage a large portfolio of weekly, monthly and annual client payrolls.
Process starters, leavers, SSP, SMP, SPP and other payroll adjustments.
Manage pensions and auto-enrolment requirements.
Independently manage client payrolls from onboarding through to ongoing delivery.
Review and sign off payroll work completed by other team members where required.
Liaise directly with clients, HMRC, pension providers and other statutory bodies.
Ensure payrolls meet agreed deadlines, SLAs and compliance requirements.
Work closely with an offshore payroll team to support wider portfolio delivery.
Maintain strong technical knowledge of UK payroll legislation.
Ideal Candidate
Strong payroll bureau/accountancy practice experience is essential.
Extensive end-to-end UK payroll processing experience.
Able to independently manage a large portfolio of client payrolls.
Strong technical knowledge of UK payroll legislation, pensions and statutory payments.
Experience reviewing or checking other payroll professionals’ work.
Previous team management experience is not essential.
BrightPay, Xero and/or Sage experience would be advantageous.
Suitable for an experienced Senior Payroll Specialist, Payroll Supervisor or Payroll Team Leader looking for their next step.
