We are currently working in partnership with an award-winning University, who are looking to appoint a Head of Health & Safety on a Permanent Contract. This will be a full-time position based in Southeast London, with hybrid working (1/2 days home working) and a salary of £63,655 - £71,157.
The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in health and safety management within a complex organisation, preferably in higher education or a similar sector.
Duties will include (but are not limited to):
- Develop and implement a comprehensive university-wide health and safety strategy, ensuring alignment with legal requirements, institutional goals, and best practices.
- Oversee day-to-day health and safety operations across the university, ensuring effective risk management for issues including fire safety, asbestos, and water safety.
- Lead investigations into health and safety incidents, accidents, and near-misses, ensuring root causes are identified and corrective actions are implemented.
- Lead the review and update of health and safety policies and procedures to reflect legislative changes and best practices, ensuring effective communication of these policies across the university.
- Ensure all accidents, incidents, and dangerous occurrences are properly reported, including filing RIDDOR reports with HSE when necessary.
- Lead, mentor, and manage the Health and Safety team, providing clear direction and support to ensure high levels of performance.
- Manage the health and safety budget, ensuring financial resources are allocated effectively and in line with university procedures.
Experience required:
- Degree or equivalent qualification in a relevant field such as Health and Safety Management, Occupational Health, or Environmental Safety.
- NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent.
- Chartered Member of IOSH (CMIOSH) or equivalent status (desirable).
- Demonstrable experience of implementing health and safety policies that comply with legislation and promote a culture of safety.
- Experience managing and leading a health and safety team.
Skills, knowledge and expertise required:
- Strong knowledge of health and safety legislation, including fire safety, asbestos regulations, and the Construction Design and Management (CDM) Regulations.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to present complex information clearly.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to influence and work collaboratively with colleagues at all levels.
