Pharmacy Technicians play a crucial role in the in-house Pharmacy Team supporting the practice's medicines management and optimisation processes. The successful applicant will work closely with the clinical team to improve patient safety, enhance prescribing efficiency and ensure cost-effective medication use. James Alexander Family Practice are looking for a professional, motivated, experienced Pharmacy Technician to join our team. This is an exciting opportunity to become a part of an expanding multi-disciplinary team that is passionate about providing high quality, standardised care for our registered population.

The Clinical Pharmacy in General Practice model is supported by the direction of national policy including the Five Year Forward View and GP Forward View where there is a need to better utilise the role of pharmacy within primary care to proactively help patients stay safe and well and out of hospital as well as helping to reduce the demands on general practice. Pharmacy Technicians play an important role complementing GPs, clinical pharmacists both in general practice and the community and other members of the multi-disciplinary team.

The successful applicant will join the team supported by our Clinical Pharmacists and wider practice Leadership Team to establish a successful pharmacy team. The successful applicant will provide cover to both of our sites, at Princes Medical Centre and Bransholme Health Centre.

Main duties of the job

  • Medication Reviews: Assist with structured medication reviews, reconciling medicines post-discharge and ensuring accurate records.
  • Repeat Prescriptions: Process and authorise repeat prescription requests in line with practice protocols and clinical guidelines.
  • Medication Safety: Identify and resolve medication-related issues, ensure compliance with national and local prescribing policies and contribute to audits.
  • Patient Education: Provide advice on medication use, side effects and adherence to treatment plans.
  • Support Prescribers: Work with the clinical team to improve prescribing quality and manage high-risk medicines.
  • Stock Management: Ensure efficient ordering, storage and disposal of medicines within the practice.
  • Data and Reporting: Assist with prescribing audits, data collection and reporting for quality improvement initiatives.

About us: James Alexander Family Practice is a large Primary Care Organisation delivering high-quality General Practice services across two sites Bransholme Health Centre and Princes Medical Centre. Patient-centred care is at the core of everything we do, and one of our key objectives is to consistently provide safe, high-quality care that meets the needs of our patients. We care for a combined list of more than 21,500 patients across our two sites. Our multidisciplinary clinical team includes GPs, Clinical Practitioners, First Contact Physiotherapists, GP Assistants, Practice Nurses, Health Care Assistants, and a dedicated Mental Health Practitioner. We are also supported by an experienced in-house Pharmacy Team. We work in close partnership with Marmot Primary Care Network, both contributing to and benefiting from the shared expertise, resources and support within the network.

Job responsibilities

  • Support the processing of repeat prescriptions, ensuring safety, accuracy and compliance with practice protocols.
  • Conduct medicines reconciliation following hospital discharges and other care transitions.
  • Assist in structured medication reviews to improve patient adherence and safety.
  • Monitor prescribing trends and support cost-effective prescribing within the surgery.
  • Identify and address medication-related queries from patients and staff.
  • Provide patients with advice on medication use, side effects and adherence.
  • Support long-term condition management by ensuring optimal medication use.
  • Handle queries regarding prescriptions and medication changes.
