The Opportunity
We are working with a large regulated infrastructure organisation that is looking to appoint an experienced Data Manager to establish and lead an enterprise wide data capability. This is a high impact role with real scope to shape how data is governed, structured and used across the business. You will play a central role in ensuring organisational data is accurate, trusted, secure and fit for operational, regulatory and strategic decision making.
The Role
Reporting to the Head of IT, the Data Manager will design and implement the organisation data strategy while building a scalable data function covering governance, architecture, engineering, master data, reporting and analytics. This role would suit someone who enjoys combining strategic ownership with hands on oversight of data delivery.
Key Responsibilities
- Establish and operate an enterprise data capability aligned to the wider technology strategy
- Develop and maintain a data strategy that supports regulatory and business objectives
- Recruit, lead and develop a small data team over time
- Manage procurement and delivery partners supporting the target data architecture
- Work closely with stakeholders to deliver timely, accurate and integrated data insight
- Define and evolve the target data architecture across warehousing, modelling and pipelines
- Ensure data integrity, security and appropriate usage across platforms
- Lead data governance initiatives including policies, classifications and quality standards
- Monitor compliance with GDPR and the Data Protection Act
- Act as a key liaison between IT, business units and third party providers
- Drive continuous improvement through data quality metrics and audits
- Support workload prioritisation alongside digital and technology teams
Skills and Experience
- Strong experience establishing or leading enterprise data capabilities
- Proven background across data governance, architecture, engineering and analytics
- Experience operating within regulated or complex environments
- Strong knowledge of Microsoft data platforms including Azure, Power Platform and Microsoft Fabric
- Solid understanding of data security, governance and compliance frameworks
- Experience managing senior stakeholders
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to explain complex data topics clearly
Desirable
- Relevant degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Information Management or similar
- Data management certifications such as DAMA CDMP or Microsoft certifications
- Experience within rail, transport or other asset intensive regulated sectors
- Exposure to machine learning or advanced analytics environments
