The Senior Building Technician position in Oxford involves maintaining safe, efficient spaces for research and teaching. This permanent role, paying between £32,108.00 and £37,338.00 annually, requires close collaboration with the Building Manager and wider team.

Responsibilities include:

  • Overseeing daily building operations to ensure research and teaching support services run efficiently.
  • Installing, maintaining and supporting research equipment, liaising with academic and technical colleagues as needed.
  • Managing movement and relocation of large or fragile laboratory equipment between labs.
  • Supporting construction and refurbishment work in laboratories, including job allocation, supervision, input and quality control.
  • Carrying out maintenance and repairs to building fabric and services, handling faults, inspection and escalation when required.
  • Planning and participating in preventative maintenance and repairs, including monitoring and fault identification.
  • Installing, moving, modifying laboratory furniture and key services (e.g. compressed air, gases, cryogens, water, air handling, extraction systems, vacuum pumps).
  • Distributing and replenishing liquid nitrogen, dry ice and other gas stocks as required.
  • Using managed waste stream processes (including non-hazardous and recycling), following required record keeping.
  • Providing technical support for teaching practices across the estate, alongside Facilities or Laboratory Technicians.
  • Understanding and supporting security and fire alarm systems, including activation and periodic testing.
  • Providing front-line emergency response during working hours, including incident management (including service shut down/rectification/isolation where needed).
  • Supporting required admin tasks: following relevant regulations, assisting with risk assessment/method statements, and maintaining maintenance/expenditure records.
  • Restocking consumables and equipment using correct procedures and keeping appropriate records.
  • Maintaining strong working relationships across Chemistry (e.g. catering, reception, stores) and with academic and student stakeholders.

What you’ll bring:

  • A C&G, HNC, HND, NVQ3 or equivalent trade qualification.
  • Demonstrable experience in servicing, troubleshooting and repairing smaller laboratory equipment, with mechanical/electrical repair capability.
  • Confidence using mechanical engineering and woodworking hand tools.
  • Clear knowledge of Health and Safety and building regulations.
  • Computer literacy with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook).
  • Ability to work flexibly, organise your time, prioritise competing tasks, and deliver to deadlines and a high standard.
  • Knowledge of a building management system and PAT testing software.

This is a full-time, on-site role in the centre of Oxford with no parking so you will need to use Park and Ride or direct bus, walk or cycle. Salary range £32 - £37k. Hours are 36.5 hours, Monday - Friday 8am - 4pm but finish at 3pm on a Friday (No on call). 28 days Holiday + Xmas Shut Down + 8 Bank Holidays.
