You will play a pivotal role in shaping engineering strategy, ensuring technical excellence, and driving safe, compliant and high-quality project delivery across all phases of design and execution.
The Role:
As Engineering Director, you will oversee all engineering activity across a diverse portfolio of major infrastructure projects, typically within the UK transmission and distribution sector (up to 400kV). You will provide authoritative technical leadership, ensure robust engineering governance, and act as the senior escalation point for technical, delivery, and safety matters. Working closely with project teams, senior leadership, clients, and regulators, you will ensure engineering outputs consistently meet regulatory, client, and industry standards.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead engineering strategy and governance across all capital and complex infrastructure projects.
- Ensure appropriate and competent engineering resources are deployed across project delivery teams.
- Establish and maintain robust technical assurance frameworks aligned with client requirements, standards, and Engineering Works Information (EWI).
- Identify, manage, and mitigate engineering, technical, and delivery risks across the project portfolio.
- Provide technical authority oversight, ensuring compliance with design approval and assurance processes.
- Lead and chair design reviews, technical assurance activities, and Design Authority processes.
- Coordinate and facilitate key project meetings with contractors, consultants, and stakeholders, including remote design teams.
- Organise and lead technical workshops and structured safety reviews, including HAZID, HAZOP, and HAZCON studies.
- Champion Safety in Design, CDM Regulations, and Principal Designer responsibilities across all projects.
- Review construction methodologies, RAMS, and commissioning documentation to ensure safe execution and operational readiness.
- Provide leadership and oversight to Engineering Managers and Project Engineers, ensuring effective delivery of engineering outputs.
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with clients, transmission operators, regulators, and industry stakeholders.
- Represent the organisation at senior technical and regulatory forums as required.
- Translate complex technical issues into clear, actionable insights for senior decision-making.
- Drive continuous improvement in engineering processes, governance, and technical standards.
- Contribute to broader business strategy, growth, and operational excellence initiatives.
About You:
You are a highly experienced senior engineering leader with deep expertise in UK power transmission and distribution infrastructure. You combine strong technical authority with strategic leadership capability and a proven ability to deliver complex, high-value engineering programmes.
Essential Experience:
- Degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline (or equivalent experience).
- Chartered Engineer status or equivalent professional recognition (preferred).
- Minimum 10 years' experience in major infrastructure and capital project delivery.
- Extensive experience in high-voltage transmission and distribution projects, including FACTS systems up to 400kV.
- Proven track record managing large-scale, multi-million-pound engineering programmes.
- Significant experience engaging with clients, regulators, and technical authorities at senior level.
Technical Expertise:
- Strong understanding of UK transmission and distribution networks.
- In-depth knowledge of CDM Regulations, ESQCR, and UK regulatory frameworks.
- Experience with engineering management systems, technical assurance processes, and capital delivery models.
- Familiarity with DNO/ICP frameworks, NEC contracts, and renewable energy infrastructure projects.
Skills & Competencies:
- Strong leadership, strategic thinking, and decision-making capability.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to influence at senior level.
- Proven stakeholder management and relationship-building ability.
- Ability to translate complex engineering challenges into clear direction and solutions.
- Strong governance mindset with attention to safety, quality, and compliance.
Other Requirements:
- Eligibility to work in the UK.
- Willingness to travel occasionally for project and client engagements.
- Flexible and adaptable approach to meet business and project demands.
This is a rare opportunity to step into a senior leadership role with significant influence over engineering strategy and delivery across critical UK energy infrastructure projects.
