RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Lead protection & control design for high-voltage substation and transmission projects.
- Approve protection schemes, relay settings, and technical designs.
- Review and sign off detailed substation protection packages (up to 400kV).
- Carry out protection coordination and fault level studies.
- Review vendor documents, specifications, and technical submissions.
- Support design from early stage through to commissioning.
- Provide technical input during construction and site activities.
- Ensure compliance with UK standards, CDM regulations, and client requirements.
- Lead engineering delivery on complex substation projects.
- Provide quality assurance and technical governance across deliverables.
- Mentor junior engineers and support team development.
- Liaise with clients and project stakeholders.
SKILLS / REQUIREMENTS:
- 12+ years' experience in Protection & Control engineering.
- Strong background in HV transmission and substation projects (132kV-400kV).
- Experience in senior or principal engineering roles within utilities.
- Strong understanding of protection systems, relays, and grid operations.
- Experience reviewing and approving technical designs and vendor data.
- Knowledge of UK transmission standards and CDM regulations.
- Strong client-facing and stakeholder management skills.
- Ability to lead multiple technical workstreams.
- Experience mentoring engineers.
DESIRABLE:
- Experience with National Grid or similar transmission operators.
- Experience in formal technical approval or authority roles.
