Senior Electrical Design Engineer

The Role

An opportunity has arisen for a Senior Electrical Design Engineer to join the team in Ivybridge.

The successful Senior Electrical Design Engineer will provide technical design expertise across complex projects, taking responsibility for medium to large-scale schemes from design through to delivery.

The role combines hands-on electrical design with project leadership, client management, technical review and mentoring responsibilities.

You will work closely with clients, contractors and wider professional teams, providing technical advice and leading the coordination of electrical engineering services.

The role will also provide opportunities to contribute to bids and proposals, resource planning and the development of the wider engineering team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Undertake electrical design work across a range of projects, from electrical building services through to high-voltage systems
  • Take responsibility for the running and delivery of medium to large-scale projects
  • Act as a key client contact throughout the development, design and coordination of electrical engineering services, installations, systems and equipment
  • Deliver electrical design and specification work across relevant RIBA stages
  • Develop and specify controls, instrumentation and operating systems associated with building engineering services
  • Undertake surveys and testing of existing electrical installations
  • Prepare dilapidation reports for existing electrical installations
  • Make day-to-day technical and project decisions relating to project progress
  • Provide direct technical advice and support to clients
  • Represent the business at technical meetings with clients, contractors and wider professional teams
  • Lead the coordination of electrical and wider engineering services
  • Review engineering calculations, drawings and technical documentation to ensure compliance with relevant standards and regulations
  • Provide technical review and quality control across electrical engineering projects
  • Undertake site quality inspections, snagging and witness testing where required
  • Ensure appropriate health and safety procedures are followed, including risk assessments when acting as Project Manager
  • Maintain accurate project work-in-progress records and support project and resource planning
  • Assist with the preparation of bids and proposals
  • Support the development of existing client relationships
  • Provide technical guidance, mentoring and support to Engineers and Graduate/Trainee Engineers
  • Support graduate development and the wider engineering team
  • Attend client and project locations as required

About You

  • BSc/BEng degree in Electrical Engineering or a relevant engineering discipline, or equivalent professional experience
  • HNC/HND or equivalent qualification with appropriate industry experience
  • Significant experience delivering electrical building services design projects
  • Strong experience across relevant RIBA design stages, including specification and detailed design
  • Good understanding of electrical building services and associated engineering systems
  • Experience working on complex projects and taking responsibility for project delivery
  • Strong knowledge of relevant British Standards, UK Regulations and industry codes
  • Good understanding of health and safety requirements and relevant legislation
  • Experience using relevant electrical engineering calculation, design and spreadsheet software
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office
  • Strong client-facing and communication skills
  • Ability to manage and prioritise your own workload and meet agreed deadlines
  • Consultancy or construction environment experience preferred
  • MCIBSE/MIET membership desirable
  • Working towards Chartered Engineer status desirable but not essential
