I am seeking a skilled Communications Engineer to join a leading Defence business supporting one of the UK's most advanced submarine programmes. This is a unique opportunity to apply your operational experience in a highly technical engineering environment, playing a key role in delivering mission‑critical external communications capability. This role would particularly suit someone with a Royal Navy CIS background who understands the operational importance of secure, resilient communications at sea and is ready to contribute to their development, integration, and acceptance within a complex engineering programme.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Lead the maturation of the submarine's external communications subsystem, progressing it from build through to test and commissioning phases.
  • Plan and execute onboard test and trial activities to validate system performance and compliance.
  • Coordinate and manage subcontractor site visits for testing activities, including submission of security documentation, delivery of health and safety briefings, and oversight of onboard operations.
  • Investigate defects and non‑conformities arising during installation or testing, driving issues through to full resolution.
  • Provide specialist technical expertise to support the development and functional design of external communications systems.
  • Define system architecture, components, interfaces, and data requirements to enable development and production of subsystem elements.
  • Interpret contractual and performance requirements for external communications systems, supporting the definition of acceptance criteria and associated verification events across design, build, integration, installation, and commissioning stages.

Skills and Experience

Essential

  • Proven experience in Field Engineering or Construction Engineering within a test and commissioning environment, including participation in test and trial events.
  • Subject matter expertise in communications systems.
  • Demonstrated experience in fault‑finding and root cause analysis.
  • Strong electrical and/or electronic engineering background.

Desirable

  • HNC, HND, or Degree qualification in an electrical or electronic engineering discipline.
