SENIOR ELECTRONICS DESIGN ENGINEER (Project Delivery)
Be a part of one of the UK's most innovative electronics design businesses, now backed by one of Europe's leading contract electronics manufacturing groups.
Jaltek has recently been acquired by Norautron AS, and as a result we are investing in both our capability and our capacity.
Jaltek is a leading technology solutions provider offering a comprehensive range of vertically integrated design and manufacturing solutions tailored to meet our client's highly diversified business requirements.
We recognise the market need to be flexible and responsive to meet the demands of a constantly changing landscape, focusing on low to medium volume high mix product profiles with localised support.
Jaltek is searching for a Senior / Principal Electronics Design Engineer who will take technical and delivery responsibility of design projects for a variety of major OEM's.
The Role
To design and support electronic products for a variety of major OEM’s in market sectors including Automotive, Clean Energy, Communication & Broadcasting, Consumer, Defence & Aerospace, Homeland Security, IP Development Platforms, Medical, Scientific Research & Space.
With this spread of market sectors you can see that the scope of projects will be vast, challenging and interesting.
This is a project ownership role.
You will be the person we trust to pick up a project and run with it: establishing what the client actually needs, deciding what work is required and how it should be approached, doing a good proportion of the design yourself, and directing the other engineers involved so that the whole thing lands on time and to the agreed budget.
Working with a multi-disciplined engineering team consisting of Mechanical, Electronic, PCB and Software Engineers you will be involved in every aspect of the product lifecycle from initial contact with the customer through quotation, conception and design to manufacture.
Software, firmware and mechanical design may be sub-contracted where a project requires them, so you will also be comfortable specifying and managing external design resource.
The work is rewarding and diverse enabling you to use the full scope of your electronic engineering skills and experience.
You will be able to work remotely and we will supply you the IT equipment as needed so that you can carry out your role.
However, we have an electronics lab located at Luton in Bedfordshire and you will need to travel into site when working on hardware and or to assist with issues as needed.
Main Responsibilities
- Take ownership of assigned design projects from initial enquiry through to production handover.
- Work directly with clients to capture, challenge and document requirements, and to convert them into a clear technical specification.
- Determine the work required to deliver a project, break it down, estimate effort and identify the skills and resource needed.
- Provide technical direction to other electronics and PCB layout engineers working on your projects, including allocating tasks and reviewing their work.
- Act as the day to day technical point of contact for the client, providing regular progress updates and managing scope, change and expectations in a professional manner.
- Carry out hands‑on hardware design, simulation, bring‑up, test and fault finding.
- Provide technical input and effort estimates to support quotations and proposals.
- Deliver to agreed timescales, identifying risks and issues early and proposing a route through them.
- Author and review key technical documentation, design reviews and reports.
- Support test, integration, EMC and qualification activities at our Luton lab, at test houses and on client sites as required.
- Contribute to our design standards, processes and continuous improvement, and support the development of less experienced engineers.
About you
You will be an experienced Electronic Design Engineer who has designed products for manufacture, accustomed to working to deadlines and able to communicate with customers in an eloquent and professional manner.
Whilst you will have a good grounding in embedded systems software your focus will be hardware.
You will be self‑managing and highly motivated with a methodical, analytical approach and a willingness to work to existing design ethics and style.
Just as importantly, you will be comfortable being the technical owner of a project.
That means being confident in front of a client, being able to make and justify design decisions, and being willing to direct and review the work of other engineers.
We would be equally happy to hear from an established Principal Engineer, or from a Senior Engineer who is ready to take that next step and is looking for the opportunity to do so.
- Ideally a degree (or equivalent) in Electronic Engineering or related discipline.
- Extensive experience of Electronics Hardware Design from concept through to production.
- Excellent analytical and problem solving skills combined with knowledge and experience of a wide range of electronic technologies and products.
- Demonstrable skills in the authoring of key technical documentation and reports.
- Ability to communicate clearly with both non-technical and technical clients.
- Adaptable engineering approach dependant on project type and clients expectations.
Essential skills and experience
- Experience of working in a relevant commercial design environment.
- Demonstrable experience of owning projects end to end, from requirements capture through to delivery against an agreed deadline.
- Experience of providing technical direction to other engineers, whether or not that has included formal line management.
- Confident and credible in direct client contact, including progress reporting and handling technical discussion and change.
- Mixed Analogue and Digital Design with Micro-controllers.
- Schematic Capture (Altium and / or Cadence).
- Highly Developed Structured Approach to Design.
- Good technical writing and documentation experience.
- FMEA and problem-solving techniques.
- Approvals and Validation.
- Eligible to obtain and hold UK Security Clearance (SC). Candidates must meet the residency and nationality criteria required to be put forward for clearance.
- Full driving licence (you may be required to support on customer sites).
Desirable skills and experience
- Switched Mode Power Supply Design.
- Good understanding of EMC testing methods & design requirements.
- Programming Experience / awareness.
- Communications Protocols: CAN, Ethernet, RS485, USB, CAN/Ethernet Diagnostics.
- Experience within a design services or consultancy environment, working across multiple clients and projects.
- Experience of specifying and managing sub-contracted software, firmware or mechanical design.
- Awareness of Signal Integrity (SI) and Power Integrity (PI) considerations in high speed and power designs.
- Experience of mentoring or developing less experienced engineers.
- Current or previously held UK Security Clearance.
What's on offer
- Competitive salary
- Hybrid / remote working
- Company pension
- Free parking
- BUPA healthcare (after successful completion of probation period)
Location
This role is primarily remotely based with the requirement to travel to our Luton HQ when projects require a hands‑on hardware element, the occasional visit to a clients site could also be required.
Because of this, you will need to live within comfortable travelling distance of Luton, Bedfordshire.
As a guide we would expect no more than around 90 minutes travel each way, as on-site days will be needed at points through a project for build, bring‑up, test and integration.
