Applied Professional Engineering Programme Degree Apprenticeship

Our Level 6 Applied Professional Engineering Programme Degree Apprenticeship is aimed at those with a passion for learning and innovation.

We’re reimagining the future of automotive, refining the quality of our combustion engines and expanding into electrification. As an Applied Professional Engineering Degree Apprentice, you will become a multi-disciplinary engineer, developing digital technology solutions for modern luxury vehicles that are renowned for their desirability and performance.

As an apprentice, you will develop the Knowledge, Skills, and Behaviours (KSBs) outlined in the apprenticeship standard. These will be assessed during your End Point Assessment (EPA), where you will demonstrate the competencies and skills you’ve gained throughout the programme.

Electrical or Electronic Technical Support pathway

Electronics is the driving force behind most of the innovations in modern vehicles, with electronic parts in most, if not all, active components of our products. As an Electrical and Electronics Engineer, you will learn a variety of valuable skills including electronic circuit design, power electronics, embedded safety critical system design, programming and more.

WHAT TO EXPECT

During your apprenticeship, you’ll gain valuable hands-on experience and career-building skills while working at the forefront of the automotive industry. This exciting programme is designed to help you build practical skills, deepen your foundational knowledge, and develop essential business behaviours such as teamwork and problem-solving. And you’ll be supported by a JLR early careers cohort leader, the university team, and your line manager every step of the way.

This programme is delivered through a combination of online study, face-to-face lectures, and independent learning each week. This gives you the chance to apply your learning from the University of Warwick to projects in a real-world environment. You’ll study a range of modules designed to build your essential knowledge, skills and behaviours, with regular process reviews along the way to ensure you’re getting the support you need from your tutors and line manager.

Years 3-4

In years 3 and 4, you will complete modules related to your chosen specialism – Electrical and Electronic Technical Support. In your final year, you’ll complete a work-based project as part of your End Point Assessment (EPA). This is an opportunity for you to use the skills and experience you gained throughout your time on the programme and apply them directly to your role. And when you’ve successfully completed your EPA, you’ll achieve your Level 6 Apprenticeship and take on new responsibilities, making a meaningful impact within the business.

Throughout your apprenticeship, you could be based within any of the following Product Engineering functional areas: Engineering Operations (EO), Engineering Propulsion (EP) or Digital Product Platform (DPP). You could also be based within our Vehicle Programmes department. You will be asked to indicate your preference during the application process.

Engineering Operations (EO) – Lyons Park and Whitley

Engineering Operations (EO) are at the heart of JLR Engineering. Involved at every stage of the engineering process, they underpin technical innovation and product delivery with programme management, tools and processes, and specialist technical services to deliver our world-class products. A diverse team, Engineering Operations harness a variety of skill sets, from project management, information management and data analytics, to building and testing prototypes. By joining Engineering Operations, you will make a difference to what we do.

You could find yourself working with teams such as our Operations, Prototype Operations, Electrical and Software, Prototype Battery Build or Test Operations team. This may include building and maintaining Labcars and facilitating testing by numerous engineering teams or delivering operational Labcars. You’ll get involved with learning how to develop and implement Electro-Mechanical Test Bench-on-Hardware in Loop (HIL) solutions via rest-bus simulation and controls deployment for robotic test rig and vehicle testing platforms or learning about the end of line testing (EOLT) and battery teardown activities.

Engineering Propulsion (EP) – Whitley or Gaydon

Our Propulsion Engineering team are leaders in the design, test, validation and certification of world-class propulsion systems aimed at delivering driving experiences that our customers will love for life. The scope of our propulsion systems is far-reaching and includes major commodity groups such as electric drive units, energy storage devices, engines, transmissions and drivelines, complemented by software system integration, calibration and control strategies.

You will be part of the design and development team working on a wide range of commodities, chargers, inverters, battery management systems, electric machines and develop your understanding of electrical design. You will build strong skills in engineering electrical systems with multiple components and acquire and interpret data utilising data acquisition tools.

Digital Product Platform (DPP) – Gaydon

DPP delivers smart, connected, clean vehicles through creativity and design innovation and offers opportunities in a variety of digital disciplines including complex systems design and electronic hardware and software creation. The features you may expect, such as cabin interior functions or infotainment but also technologies such as connectivity, off-board processing and mobile app design to provide a wider range of customer experience.

Working within DPP offers the opportunity to be involved in a variety of activities related to all parts of the product lifecycle. These include system design, electronics development and test, requirements and design through to implementation and validation. Working with external partners, you may also review and develop test cases, including propulsion and energy management systems as well as active suspension control, Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), infotainment and convenience features such as interior cabin controls.

WHAT’S REQUIRED?

You’ll need to have achieved GCSE Maths and English Language at level 5 or above. You’ll also need three additional GCSEs at level 5 (C) or higher, to include one STEM subject.

In addition, you will need to have achieved or be on track to achieve A-level Maths at grade B or higher and an additional A-level in Physics, Chemistry, Design & Technology or Engineering at grade C or higher.
