Location: Cambridge, UK – This position can accommodate flexible working options. However, candidates must be based (or be willing to relocate) within a comfortable commuting distance of our Cambridge office to be able to attend onsite as required. This is an 18-month fixed term contract.
Are you an experienced QA Analyst who is excited by the technical side of how games are built and maintained? As a Technical QA Analyst embedded within the Old School RuneScape Engineering team, you’ll play a vital role in ensuring the quality, stability, and performance of our game engine and its supporting systems. Working closely with engineers and designers, you’ll test engine‑level changes, investigate complex issues, and provide meaningful feedback that helps deliver impactful updates to millions of players. This is a fantastic opportunity for someone who enjoys both the creative and technical sides of game development. You’ll go beyond functional testing, learning and applying technical QA skills that improve product quality at a deeper, systemic level while contributing to one of the most iconic MMORPGs in gaming history.
What you’ll be doing:
- Create and execute structured test plans across game engine features and supporting modules.
- Test engine‑level changes and investigate complex technical issues, reporting clear, actionable bugs and risks.
- Participate in playtests and provide qualitative feedback on game mechanics and content.
- Investigate player‑reported issues and report findings to support continuous improvement.
- Work closely within a multi-disciplinary team, collaborating with engineers to validate fixes and clarify requirements.
- Develop debugging scripts using our in‑house scripting language to support more advanced testing approaches.
- Conduct Release Candidate testing for engine updates to ensure stability and readiness for deployment.
- Identify and escalate risks that could impact game quality, player experience, or business success.
What we’re looking for:
- Experience testing game engine features, technical systems, or backend modules within a live game environment.
- Strong understanding of structured testing methodologies, including test case creation, execution, and risk‑based testing approaches.
- Comfortable working across PC and mobile platforms, with practical awareness of operating systems, hardware environments, and platform‑specific behaviours.
- Experience investigating complex defects, reproducing issues, and documenting clear, actionable bug reports.
- Ability to create or work with debugging scripts or in‑house scripting languages to support advanced technical testing.
- Relevant degree or certifications in Software, Programming, QA, or Agile methodologies (e.g. ISTQB) are advantageous.
- In‑depth knowledge of RuneScape or Old School RuneScape would be beneficial.
