Your impact

In this role, you’ll play a key part in maintaining the safety and integrity of Hertfordshire’s highway structures. You’ll lead inspections across a diverse portfolio of assets – from rural culverts to urban viaducts – ensuring they meet safety standards and reporting their condition using digital tools. Your time will be split between planning and carrying out site inspections and report writing, with flexibility to work from home part of the week as part of our hybrid working arrangements.

You’ll be supported by a collaborative team and provided with training if you’re new to bridge inspections. Whether you’re an experienced inspector or come from a related background in civil engineering, surveying, or supervision, we’ll help you grow your skills and contribute meaningfully to our mission of delivering smarter, safer infrastructure. A company vehicle will be provided for site work, and occasional overnight stays or travel to other UK locations may be required.

You’ll also

  • Lead and carry out General, Principal, and Special Inspections across the county and occasionally support other Jacobs projects, if required.
  • Develop safe systems of work and plan inspections with colleagues and contractors.
  • Mentor junior team members and check inspection reports.
  • Proactively identify and report safety concerns affecting public infrastructure.
  • Help drive innovation in how we deliver inspections and manage data.

As part of our long‑term partnership with Hertfordshire County Council, we’re looking for a Structures Inspector to join our integrated ‘One Service’ team based in our modern Stevenage office.

Here’s what you’ll need

  • A strong commitment to safety and sustainability.
  • Team player with strong communication, collaboration, and time‑management skills; good report writing skills, especially for Principal Inspections.
  • Experience in highway structures inspections is ideal, but not essential – training will be provided.
  • Background in civil engineering, highways supervision, surveying, or similar; an engineering‑related qualification is beneficial.
  • Knowledge of Bridge Inspection Standards and Codes of Practice is desirable; BICS certification is a strong advantage but not required.
  • Familiarity with inspection databases (e.g., Confirm, BridgeStation) is a plus.
  • Understanding of small maintenance schemes is advantageous.
  • Willingness to attend training courses (e.g., CSCS, Working in Water).
  • Full UK driving licence is essential.
  • Flexibility for occasional overnight work and travel outside Hertfordshire.
