Your impact: Jacobs is playing a leading role in the global energy transition. As our UK and Continental Europe team continues to expand, we are seeking a Principal Cable System Engineer to support a range of high-profile projects across our Power & Energy portfolio. This includes high voltage AIS and GIS substations, transmission system assets, HVDC interconnectors, and energy storage systems.

Responsibilities:

  • Developing HV/EHV cabling systems specifications, concept/detailed design and design review, estimation, site supervision and support as required.
  • Provide technical support to the team on all aspects of HV cable system engineering and design.
  • Prepare plant and equipment technical specification, power cable route specifications, tender specifications, technical and progress reports.
  • Ensuring correct and accurate interface with other engineering functions involved in the projects; attend, and conduct internal and external meetings with colleagues, clients, and subcontractors.
  • Perform technical calculations including cable size, rating calculations, TMF and EMF calculations, sheath induced voltage calculations and other.
  • Perform design reviews, verification of design.
  • Ensuring all project designs are compliant with CDM regulations, relevant legislation and company procedures.
  • Assist with temporary works design schemes.
  • Maintain good working relations with client/designer/team, together with our supply chain.
  • Ensure that the drawings and specification documents contain sufficient, accurate information for construction of the works; formally request any missing information in sufficient time to allow the programme to proceed without delay.
  • Ensure that inspection and test plans are completed as required by the PMP/specification, including a check of dimension accuracy and quality.

Requirements:

  • Degree (or equivalent) in Electrical Power Engineering.
  • Previous experience with consultancy, contractor or utility in the energy sector.
  • Extensive experience in a cable related role supporting FEED design and/or detailed design.
  • Ability to manage and lead HV/EHV cable designs at all project stages.
  • Experienced user of CYMCAP to support cable system design.
  • Experience of working at EHV transmission voltages.
  • Experience in the design of HV and EHV cable systems, for both HVAC and HVDC systems.
  • Familiarity with National Grid and DNO standards and processes.
