We are looking for a Geoscience apprentice to join our Birmingham office. You will work towards achieving a Level 6 Geoscience Degree Apprenticeship at Keele University. You will be assigned a dedicated mentor to guide your development and will be supported to achieve a bachelor’s degree in Geoscience (BSc), student membership of the Geological Society and to work towards Chartership as part of this degree apprenticeship.

Responsibilities:

  • Geoscience skills support a diverse range of projects, including resilient transport networks, adaptation to coastal erosion and flood risk, developing low carbon power generation and transmission systems, solving problems in nuclear waste management, and developing carbon capture and storage sites.
  • You will work in our Tunnelling and Ground Engineering team, which includes expertise in engineering geology, geomorphology and geohazards, geophysics, hydrogeology, geotechnical engineering and tunnelling.
  • Our work combines geoscience with civil engineering, providing opportunities to play a vital role on a variety of projects from inception to construction.

What you’ll gain:

  • Gain experience working on multi-disciplinary projects by supporting desk studies; using field and remote-sensing techniques to characterize site hazards; assisting with ground investigations and field work; describing soils and rocks in accordance with British Standards; assisting in the preparation of ground model reports; supporting the use of software for mapping, analysis and data management (including GIS, coding and slope stability modelling); undertaking geotechnical designs and calculations; producing technical drawings and supporting construction and ground investigation site work.

Requirements:

  • A levels at a minimum grade of BBB, or BTEC at a minimum of DDM, or International Baccalaureate 29.
  • Applicants aged 16-18 at the start of the apprenticeship must hold GCSE qualifications in Maths and English at Grade 4 (C) or equivalent.
  • A keen interest in applied geoscience, including geology and physical geography.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • A flexible and proactive self-starter who’s passionate about developing new skills.
  • Ability to adapt and prioritise while balancing work and study.
  • Enthusiasm and curiosity to apply your skills to real-world problems.
  • Empathy and listening skills to understand client requirements.
  • A well-rounded person with diverse experiences.
  • You must have the permanent right to work in the UK.
