Jacobs is playing a leading role in the global energy transition. Our UK and Continental Europe team is expanding, and we seek a Principal Cable System Engineer to support high‐profile projects across our Power & Energy portfolio, including high voltage AIS and GIS substations, transmission assets, HVDC interconnectors and energy storage systems. You will lead the design delivery of Cable System Projects up to 400 kV, from tendering through to handover.
Responsibilities
- Develop HV/EHV cabling system specifications, concept and detailed design, design review, estimation, and site supervision and support.
- Provide technical support to the team on all aspects of HV cable system engineering and design.
- Prepare plant and equipment technical specifications, power cable route specifications, tender specifications, technical and progress reports.
- Ensure correct and accurate interface with other engineering functions, and attend and conduct internal and external meetings with colleagues, clients, and subcontractors.
- Perform technical calculations including cable size, rating calculations, TMF and EMF calculations, sheath‐induced voltage calculations and others.
- Conduct design reviews and verify designs.
- Ensure all project designs are compliant with CDM regulations, relevant legislation and company procedures.
- Assist with temporary works design schemes.
- Maintain good working relationships with client/designer/team and supply chain.
- Ensure drawings and specification documents contain sufficient, accurate information for construction of the works and formally request any missing information in a timely manner.
- Ensure inspection and test plans are completed as required, including a check of dimensional accuracy and quality.
Qualifications
- Degree (or equivalent) in Electrical Power Engineering.
- Previous experience with consultancy, contractor or utility in the energy sector.
- Extensive experience in a cable‐related role supporting FEED design and/or detailed design.
- Ability to manage and lead HV/EHV cable designs at all project stages.
- Experienced user of CYMCAP to support cable system design.
- Experience working at EHV transmission voltages.
- Experience in the design of HV and EHV cable systems, for both HVAC and HVDC systems.
- Familiarity with National Grid and DNO standards and processes.
