We are seeking an experienced Business Analyst Contractor to support a short-term process discovery and documentation project. This assignment will focus on understanding, documenting and improving operational, digital and data-driven business processes within a complex organisation.

This is a hands-on role requiring an inquisitive and proactive individual who can quickly engage with stakeholders, extract knowledge, document current-state processes and produce clear, business-friendly artefacts.

The successful candidate will investigate existing ways of working, document end-to-end processes, create process maps and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and translate complex operational and technical information into accessible documentation.

Key ResponsibilitiesProcess Discovery & Analysis

  • Lead discovery activities to understand existing business processes, procedures and system interactions.
  • Conduct stakeholder interviews, workshops and knowledge-gathering sessions.
  • Analyse current ways of working and document process dependencies.
  • Identify process gaps, risks, inefficiencies and documentation opportunities.
  • Capture and document current-state processes in a clear and consistent format.

Process Mapping & Documentation

  • Produce Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3 process maps.
  • Create Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), work instructions and process documentation.
  • Develop process flows, decision trees and governance artefacts where required.
  • Ensure documentation supports long-term knowledge retention and operational consistency.
  • Translate technical concepts into business-friendly documentation.

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Facilitate workshops and playback sessions with business and technical stakeholders.
  • Challenge and validate requirements to ensure documented processes accurately reflect reality.
  • Build strong relationships across multiple teams and functions.
  • Secure stakeholder review and approval of deliverables.

Delivery

  • Manage multiple deliverables within a fast-paced environment.
  • Deliver high-quality outputs with strong attention to detail.
  • Work independently while maintaining regular communication with programme leadership.
  • Incorporate feedback and finalise documentation within agreed timescales.

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Proven experience as a Business Analyst delivering process discovery and documentation projects.
  • Strong process mapping experience using Visio or equivalent tools.
  • Experience creating SOPs, operational procedures and business documentation.
  • Excellent requirements gathering and stakeholder interviewing skills.
  • Ability to document end-to-end business processes, controls and exception handling procedures.
  • Strong workshop facilitation experience.
  • Experience translating technical information into clear business language.
  • Ability to work autonomously and rapidly get up to speed in new environments.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.

Desirable Experience

  • Utilities, energy, water or other regulated industry experience.
  • Knowledge of BPMN and process modelling methodologies.
  • Experience documenting data flows, governance and operational controls.
  • Understanding of ITIL environments and service management processes.
  • Experience supporting digital transformation or operational improvement initiatives.
  • Previous consultancy or contractor experience.
