The Opportunity

J3A Recruitment are proud to be working with a well-established infrastructure and engineering contractor delivering major projects across the UK water sector. Due to continued success and a growing AMP8 workload, our client is looking to appoint a Commissioning Engineer to support the delivery of projects across the Thames Water framework throughout the Thames Valley region. This is an excellent opportunity for a Commissioning Engineer to join a business with a strong reputation for delivering complex MEICA and infrastructure projects within the water industry. Working closely with Project Managers, Design Teams, Site Teams, Mechanical and Electrical Engineers, you'll play a key role in ensuring assets are safely commissioned, tested, handed over and fully operational for the end client. Whether your background is Electrical, ICA, Mechanical or Process-led commissioning, this role offers exposure to a diverse portfolio of water and wastewater projects throughout AMP8.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the successful commissioning and handover of water and wastewater projects across the Thames Water region.
  • Review design documentation, technical specifications and drawings to identify potential commissioning risks and challenges.
  • Develop commissioning plans, programmes and strategies to ensure smooth project delivery.
  • Coordinate commissioning activities across Mechanical, Electrical, ICA and Process disciplines.
  • Work closely with Project Managers, Engineers, Clients, Designers and Supply Chain Partners throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Attend project and commissioning meetings to provide technical support and progress updates.
  • Review subcontractor commissioning documentation, method statements and test procedures.
  • Monitor commissioning progress and produce regular reports highlighting risks, delays and mitigation actions.
  • Carry out site inspections to ensure systems and installations are ready for commissioning activities.
  • Organise and support client witnessing, testing and sign-off procedures.
  • Assist with the production and completion of handover documentation and O&M manuals.
  • Support system demonstrations and operator training where required.
  • Manage post-handover commissioning and defect resolution activities.

About You

We're keen to speak with experienced Commissioning Engineers who have worked within the water, utilities, industrial, process, manufacturing or infrastructure sectors. You will ideally possess:

  • Previous experience working as a Commissioning Engineer, Commissioning Manager, ICA Engineer, Electrical Engineer or similar.
  • Experience delivering commissioning activities on Mechanical, Electrical and ICA systems.
  • Strong understanding of water and wastewater treatment processes would be advantageous.
  • Knowledge of PLC-controlled systems, telemetry, instrumentation and process control equipment.
  • Ability to review technical drawings, schematics and commissioning documentation.
  • Experience producing commissioning plans, procedures and reports.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities and a proactive approach to project delivery.
  • SMSTS qualification & CSCS Card.
  • Relevant engineering qualification (HNC, HND, NVQ Level 3 or Degree) would be beneficial.
