A day in the life of a Murphy Engineer involves establishing and promoting best practices in health, safety, and environmental matters in conjunction with the SHES department. Responsibilities include:
- Agreeing technical requirements with clients, ensuring full understanding, and questioning where necessary.
- Undertaking site visits and inspections when appropriate.
- Prioritising and monitoring the day-to-day workload of engineers and technical staff within the design team and Key Equipment Suppliers.
- Overseeing key vendor packages and contributing to the timely production of design deliverables.
- Managing the interface between key vendor packages and the design team.
- Identifying and assessing technical opportunities for value engineering.
- Providing project reports to the Engineering Manager as required, including financial and programme progress, forecasts, and early warnings on issues.
- Ensuring that design work is carried out in accordance with applicable legal requirements and company procedures while maintaining a high level of professionalism.
- Managing key vendor detailed designs in accordance with current standards and codes, including calculations, design risk assessments, and sufficiently detailed sketches for the preparation of working drawings.
- Providing a technical assessment and review of 3rd Party designs, ensuring compliance with the brief to meet client and Murphy requirements.
- Checking the design work of other staff members and external designers.
- Providing advice and guidance on design issues.
- Resolving technical project design issues, incidents, defects, and failures, including incident investigation, examining causes of failure, rectification analysis, review, advice, and redesign.
- Maintaining responsibility for the storage, filing, and archiving of documents relevant to design tasks.
- Managing the financial and commercial aspects of the project with the support of the Engineering Manager, monitoring progress against, and ensuring the project is delivered to, agreed programme and budget.
- Administering and monitoring design changes.
Qualifications include IEng/CEng, experience in large civil engineering projects, and experience within Oil or Gas, Substations, or Linear Cables. The role requires the ability and confidence to communicate and present to top-level management, senior-level clients, and the public, as well as excellent knowledge of current civil engineering legislation, Health & Safety, and Environmental legislation. Candidates should be able to discuss engineering issues with people across various levels and disciplines and produce, implement, and manage safe systems of work for construction procedures.
