A day in the life of a Murphy Senior Design Engineer involves working with the Principal Engineer (HV Plant) to prepare 3D models of substation HV plant layouts for new builds and extensions of electrical substations up to 400kV. Responsibilities include:
- Preparing technical specifications for electrical plant items like circuit breakers, disconnectors, earth switches, and instrument transformers for Air Insulated and Gas Insulated switchgear.
- Reviewing Original Equipment Supplier (OEM) quotations and documentation to ensure compliance and integration into overall designs.
- Preparing client drawings using AutoCAD of detailed design aspects, such as layout and elevations, earthing, and mechanical interlocking schemes in line with the client’s technical specifications.
- Working with Assistant Engineers and CAD operators to prepare Design Packages for final checking before Client review and issue for construction purposes, ensuring quality and high standards are maintained.
- Providing technical support during construction and commissioning, including formal responses to site technical queries and preparation of modifications for design errors or other reasons that compel amendments to fulfil functional requirements.
- Collaborating closely with other sections of the substation engineering design team on multi-disciplinary projects to facilitate an optimal engineering function.
- Establishing and promoting best practices in health, safety, and environmental matters in conjunction with the SHQE department.
- Supervising assistant engineers, apprentice engineers, or CAD operators, providing mentoring where required.
- Supporting tenders, driving innovation, and producing cost-effective integrated substation solutions in collaboration with the Principal Engineer, other Senior Engineers, and the Engineering Manager.
- Working closely with Operations and Site Management teams to produce construction methodologies, Impressed Voltage (IV) management plans, and CDM drawings to support tenders.
- Developing knowledge of National Grid Specifications with the view to applying for National Grid TP137 Contractor Design Approval Engineer as required.
Qualifications:
- HV Electrical Plant layout designs experience – at least 3-4 years.
- Knowledge of the working principles of different types of Electrical Plant and instrument transformers.
- Understanding of protection and control interfaces for AIS and GIS substations.
- Familiarity with National Grid technical specifications for substation design.
- Efficiency in Revit, Navisworks (or other relevant 3D systems), and AutoCAD software applications for making 3D models and 2D drawings.
- Knowledge of National Grid Technical Specifications.
