Reporting to: Senior Mechanical EICA Design Engineer

Liaising with: Design Team and Delivery Team

Role Purpose:

As part of the Design Team, the Mechanical Design Engineer will be responsible for designing, developing, and optimising mechanical systems for water and wastewater treatment projects.

This role involves working within multidisciplinary teams to ensure mechanical components are integrated into the overall project design, meet industry and regulatory standards, and contribute to the efficiency and reliability of water treatment processes. The Mechanical Design Engineer will support the entire design lifecycle, from concept through to detailed design and final commissioning, ensuring systems are delivered on time and within budget.

Role Summary:

  • Design mechanical systems and equipment for water and wastewater treatment plants, including pumps, pipelines, valves, filtration systems, and other mechanical infrastructure.

  • Develop detailed mechanical designs, including 3D Models, schedules, calculations, equipment layouts, and technical specifications.

  • Ensure designs are compliant with industry regulations, technical standards, and client requirements.

  • Collaborate with Civil, EICA, and process engineers to ensure mechanical systems are fully integrated with other project components.

  • Produce and review mechanical design documentation, including reports, specifications, calculations, and equipment schedules

  • Provide technical support during the procurement, installation, and commissioning stages, ensuring that mechanical systems are installed and operate according to the design intent.

  • Assist in evaluating vendor proposals and selecting mechanical equipment, ensuring suitability for project needs and compliance with specifications.

  • Conduct technical reviews of mechanical designs to ensure accuracy, functionality, and adherence to project requirements and timelines.

  • Participate in design risk assessments, identifying potential design challenges and proposing solutions to optimise mechanical system performance and safety.

  • Stay updated on industry advancements, new technologies, and best practices related to mechanical design in water and wastewater treatment.

  • Ensure that mechanical designs consider energy efficiency, safety, access, lifting, sustainability, and cost-effectiveness

Technical Specification

Experience Required:

  • 3-5 years of experience in mechanical design engineering, preferably within the water or wastewater industry.

  • Experience designing mechanical systems for water treatment plants, including pumps, piping systems, valves, and other mechanical infrastructure.

  • Knowledge of relevant mechanical standards, regulations, and codes.

  • Understanding of mechanical equipment procurement, installation, and commissioning processes.

  • Experience with project documentation, including mechanical specifications, P&IDs, and equipment schedules.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.

  • Familiarity with 3D modelling and CAD software, such as AutoCAD, Revit, SolidWorks or similar design tools.

  • Solid understanding of mechanical systems in water and wastewater treatment processes

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.

  • Professional certification or working towards Chartered Engineer (CEng) status.

  • Familiarity with Building Information Modelling (BIM) and its application in mechanical design.

  • Experience with sustainable mechanical design practices, including energy-efficient equipment and processes.
