Carers Isle of Wight supports unpaid carers across the Island who look after family members or friends. Many carers create art, crafts or handmade items as a creative outlet or small income stream, but need support to share or sell their work online. We are looking for a volunteer who can help carers set up and manage an online presence — such as a simple website or a selling platform like Etsy, eBay, or Folksy — so that they can showcase and sell their creations confidently and independently. The role could also include offering broader digital support, such as helping carers to get more comfortable using smartphones, tablets, social media, or other online tools to stay connected and organised.

Main Tasks

  • Support carers to create and manage online selling profiles or simple websites.
  • Upload photos, write descriptions, and manage sales or listings.
  • Understand how to maintain their sites safely and independently.
  • Provide one-to-one or small group support to build carers’ digital confidence.
  • Assist with practical digital skills, such as setting up email accounts and passwords securely.
  • Using tablets, mobile phones, and apps.
  • Staying safe online and recognising scams.
  • Encourage and empower carers to develop self-sufficiency in managing their digital tools and platforms.
  • Keep simple records of support sessions if required.

Training and Support

Full induction and ongoing support provided by Carers Isle of Wight staff. Access to relevant training opportunities.

Benefits to You

  • Make a meaningful difference to local carers’ lives.
  • Share your digital and creative skills for social good.
  • Gain experience in digital mentoring and community support.
  • Meet new people and become part of a friendly, supportive team.

Skills and Qualities Required

  • Confident in using online platforms such as Etsy, Shopify, or WordPress (or willing to learn).
  • Basic understanding of digital safety, social media, and online selling practices.
  • Patient, approachable, and able to explain things clearly to beginners.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Reliable, organised, and able to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Respectful of confidentiality and sensitive to carers’ individual circumstances.
  • A genuine interest in supporting others to develop new skills and confidence.

Training provided. Volunteers covered by insurance.
