We are seeking an enthusiastic, team-orientated OOH Veterinary Nurse to join our team at Penmellyn Vets on a part-time basis. Located in the heart of Mid Cornwall, Penmellyn Vets has a main hospital in St Columb, supported by 5 branch surgeries throughout the area. This role will be primarily based at our main hospital, where our out-of-hours service is also based.

Practice Highlights

  • Busy hospital caseload with regular medical, surgical and orthopaedic referrals
  • Overnight support, with twilight, prep nurse and morning SVN cover

How You’ll Make a Difference

As an OOH Veterinary Nurse, you will be an integral member of the clinical team, delivering high-quality nursing care to patients while supporting excellent client experiences. You’ll work collaboratively with veterinary surgeons and the wider practice team, taking responsibility for the nursing care of a range of first opinion cases, contributing to clinical standards, and supporting the ongoing development of patient care within the practice.

Working Pattern

  • 31.25 hours per week
  • 2 days every other week on a rolling rota – Wednesday & Friday in Week 1 (with potential for 3 days) and Monday, Friday Saturday in Week 2.
  • Shift times are 7:30pm – 8:00am

General Responsibilities

  • Post-operative care and management of surgical inpatients, including orthopaedic cases.
  • Medical and surgical management of a varied caseload
  • Assisting with and performing a range of surgical procedures.
  • Providing ECC care, including blood transfusions through the Pet Blood Bank.

  • Registration as a Veterinary Nurse with the RCVS
  • Experience working in clinical practice with an interest in OOHs and Wards nursing.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to build positive relationships with clients and colleagues
  • Good organisational skills and the ability to manage workload effectively
  • A proactive approach to learning, reflection, and continuous improvement
