Support and growth with South Wales Vets
At South Wales Vets, we are seeking a Veterinary Surgeon to join our dedicated and experienced team. This role offers a balanced mix of consultations and routine & emergency surgery, with 1-2 designated surgery days per week. You\’ll have plenty of time to work up cases, ensuring strong case continuity while also offering expert preventative healthcare advice to our patients.
Our practice sees a wide variety of interesting medical and surgical cases. We have an in-house orthopaedic vet handling both internal and external referrals, as well as a vet currently working towards a certificate in ophthalmology, who manages internal referrals. You’ll also have the chance to handle emergency cases, all while being supported by our knowledgeable team.

Flexible rota patterns that work for you – 4 day week, no OOH
Our people are at the heart of everything that we do, that’s why we know that work-life balance is vital in supporting our people to be their best selves. Whether you need reduced working days/hours for hobbies, need to do the school drop off/pick up or would simply like a more flexible rota pattern, we can fix or flex our patterns to suit you – you tell us what you need.
Typically, the full-time position 40 hours across 4 days between 8:30am to 7pm with 1:4 Saturdays between 9am to 2pm and no OOH. We would also welcome part time applicants, for example a 3-day week.
Our dynamic team (with certificate holders)
Here at Abertillery, we have a supportive team of 1-2 Vets, who are both supported by our Head Nurse, 3 RVNS and our 2 wonderful Receptionists.
Across the group, we have a support network of 2 CDs (surgery certificate holder & orthopaedic interest), Senior Vet (surgery certificate holder), 8 Vets (including an internal medicine certificate holder), 20 RVNs, our progressive Practice Manager & other supporting team members. Our Clinical Directors are readily available to assist with clinical cases and advice. CPD and further learning is actively encouraged and supported.
Our newly refurbished practice
South Wales Vets was established over 10 years ago on Malpas Road in Newport and in that time we have grown from one to four branches, with locations in Risca, Abertillery & Blackwood.
Abertillery has recently been fully refurbished with a large spacious waiting area, 2 consulting rooms, separate section for cats and dogs in addition to a warming, welcoming reception area. Additionally, our clinical area has cat and dog inpatient wards and excellent surgical facilities. We have digital x-ray, ultrasound, in house laboratory, superior surgery suite with imaging and dental facilities.
