Practice Overview
Portchester Vets has been caring for pets and their people for over 10 years and has become a true go‑to practice for the local community. Located just a short walk from the high street, we are known for our friendly atmosphere, loyal clients and strong relationships built on trust. We are now looking for a confident Veterinary Surgeon to join our close‑knit team and play a key role in our continued success.
A warm, homely practice environment:
Set within a converted house, our practice has a welcoming, homely feel from the moment you step inside. You will find a cosy reception with waiting area and dispensary, two consult rooms, a prep area and theatre, separate cat and dog kennels with an isolation unit, and a quiet room for more sensitive cases. There is also a dedicated lab, X‑ray room, office space and a comfortable staff room with refreshment facilities, alongside on‑site parking.
Varied caseload with real clinical autonomy:
The practice mainly sees cats and dogs, with the occasional rabbit, offering a well‑balanced mix of consultations and theatre time. Cases are largely routine, but you will be fully supported to work them up thoroughly using digital and dental X‑ray, ultrasound, endoscopy, K‑laser and an in‑house IDEXX laboratory. Strong relationships with neighbouring practices provide referral options when needed, while the role includes some sole charge, making it ideal for a vet who enjoys autonomy and feels confident in their decision‑making.
Supportive team with a community mindset:
You will be supported by a hands‑on nursing team who are always ready to assist and contribute actively to patient care. The wider team shares a genuine sense of pride in the practice and the local area, creating a friendly, collaborative environment where everyone looks out for one another. While this is a Veterinary Surgeon position, there is genuine scope to step into a lead role and progress within the team if that is something you would like to explore.
Balanced working that respects your time:
This is a full‑time role of 38 hours across four days, with one in three Saturday mornings from 9 am to 12 pm. There are no out‑of‑hours or on‑call requirements, and part‑time applications are also welcome, offering flexibility to suit different lifestyles.
A small team with big heart:
You will join a dedicated team made up of one vet, four RVNs, two SVNs and a supportive client‑care team. We also have the ability to bring in visiting specialists when required, ensuring excellent care for our patients and strong clinical support for the team.
Life in Fareham and beyond:
Fareham offers the perfect blend of coastal living, community spirit and convenience. With easy access to Portsmouth Harbour, the South Downs and the Solent coastline, it is ideal for those who enjoy the outdoors. The town itself has great local shops, cafés and amenities, alongside excellent transport links to Portsmouth, Southampton and London. Whether you are drawn to seaside walks, historic villages or a relaxed pace of life with everything close by, Fareham and the surrounding area offer a fantastic place to live and work.
