Overview

Production Journalist – ITV News Central

Full Time | Permanent

Office location: Birmingham

Hiring range: £29,034- £39,697

Role

We are looking for an experienced and multi-skilled Production Journalist to join our broadcast and digital news team at ITV News Central, which holds the Royal Television Society award for the best regional news programme and prides itself on editorial excellence. We are a multi-platform operation so you will be enthusiastic about developing an online presence through our website, social media and the ITV Central regional rail on ITVX.

We are seeking a self-motivated and enthusiastic candidate with many story ideas relevant to this richly diverse part of the UK. The role involves working across digital platforms and on TV, producing creative content and collaborating effectively as part of a team. The successful candidate will have a strong contact list and a clear understanding of how to get stories to air and onto digital platforms, thriving under a demanding and changing workload, meeting tight deadlines and staying calm under pressure.

The role is based in our Birmingham newsroom and the successful candidate will already have experience working on television and digital news production. The role involves producing bulletins during Good Morning Britain, as well as lunchtime, late and weekend bulletins, and curating our website and publishing stories on ITVX, along with story planning. You should have a passion for creativity, strong editorial judgement and excellent organisational skills, and a passion for digital curation to engage our digital audience.

You will have excellent written and verbal communication skills, the ability to develop good working relationships with colleagues and external contacts, strong editorial judgement and social media skills, and a good understanding of what gets the Midlands talking. You will have qualifications in media law and a thorough understanding of the Ofcom Code.

To be considered for an interview, you will need to submit a covering letter and a CV.

Skills you\’ll need (minimum criteria)

  • Fully qualified NCTJ, BJTC or equivalent experience
  • Working knowledge of Ofcom code, media law and compliance
  • The ability to generate, research and develop original ideas and take a creative approach to storytelling, treatments and production for both on-air and online
  • Knowledge and understanding of digital platforms and how to tap into new audiences online
  • Excellent organisational skills and the ability to plan multiple stories while prioritising tasks
  • Strong writing skills for TV and digital (accurate spelling and grammar essential)
  • Excellent news judgement
  • A strong knowledge of the Midlands and awareness of the stories that engage our audiences

Other things we\’re looking for (key criteria)

  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to work well in a team environment
  • Self-motivated and quick-thinking, with resilience in a busy newsroom across day, early, late and weekend working
  • Willingness and aptitude to learn other skills and share skills with others
  • Ability to work to deadlines
  • Decisive under pressure
  • Ability to bring in stories from underrepresented people across the Midlands

Please note, the rostered hours for this role will include weekend working, late shifts, early morning shifts and Bank Holidays. The working pattern will incorporate late shifts (typically 00:00 finish) and early mornings (typically 04:45 start). You will be expected to provide your own means of transportation to and from your main workplace.

Because of the nature of news production, there will be occasions when you are required to work long and unsociable hours at short notice. Some members of the Production Team may be required to travel to district offices or work in other news operations as well as attending relevant forums, development sessions and meetings off site as part of their role.

Equality, Diversity and Inclusion

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion are central to ITV Central and we reflect our audience on screen and in our workforce. ITV is for Everyone and we encourage applications from Deaf, Disabled and Neurodivergent people and People of Colour to apply for this role.

Newsrooms are busy and pressurised environments, often requiring quick decisions under pressure. We test these abilities at interview to understand how candidates will react in a newsroom. We will consider reasonable adjustments during the interview process, including sharing key themes on request in connection with a neurodivergent condition, while ensuring that we can test the candidate’s ability to operate in a newsroom environment.

Dates

Closing date: Wednesday 22nd October 2025

Interview date: Monday 3rd November 2025

Notice period: 2 months (including any new contracts/secondments)
