Overview

The ITV News Granada team are looking for an experienced journalist to join their team of Content Editors. Content Editors support the Senior Content Editor in ensuring that all online and broadcast content is as excellent, relevant and up-to-date as it can be. They work as part of a team of Content Editors co‑ordinating day‑to‑day news gathering online and on‑screen. They also act as the main curator for work on our news websites, social media and ITVX. Content Editors may form part of the News Management team working alongside key production colleagues to assist the Head of News in agreeing and communicating strategy as well as leading projects. On occasion Content Editors may be required to deputise for the Digital Content Editor or Senior Content Editor.

Responsibilities

  • Support the Senior Content Editor in ensuring all online and broadcast content is excellent, relevant and up-to-date.
  • Co‑ordinate day‑to‑day news gathering online and on‑screen as part of the Content Editors team.
  • Act as the main curator for news websites, social media and ITVX.
  • Assist the Head of News in agreeing and communicating strategy and lead projects as part of the News Management team.
  • Depute for the Digital Content Editor or Senior Content Editor when required.
  • Take a lead in curating and maintaining ITV's online news service ITVX and our news website, generating ideas and driving digital media coverage.
  • Work closely with the Programme & Digital Editor to oversee high‑quality Programme, Bulletins, or opt production, ensuring that editorial, technical, legal/compliance and timing requirements are consistently met.
  • Lead day‑to‑day newsgathering and other projects by coordinating the coverage of breaking stories and planned events, reacting swiftly and accurately to news stories.
  • Lead the advance planning of content for all news output across all platforms, preparing comprehensive long‑term and weekly prospect lists, and generating a constant flow of original news and feature ideas.
  • Oversee the planning and production of all news features, current affairs, programme strands and ITV projects.
  • Provide line management to a group of colleagues; promote ITV News initiatives; support the Head of News and Senior Content Editor in implementing initiatives; motivate others and set an example of professionalism.
  • Generate original and creative ideas, contribute to the news agenda on‑screen and online.
  • Research and develop story ideas thoroughly and creatively for on‑air and online output.
  • Make, maintain and nurture a wide range of relevant contacts.
  • Be pro‑active about diversity, equity & inclusion, ensuring output reflects stories and issues across the audience spectrum.
  • Source interesting contributors from all parts of the community and bring stories to life.
  • Make optimal use of the full suite of newsroom technology, adhering to workflow, including editing, graphics and digital curation.
  • Write scripts that are accurate, concise and engaging.
  • Provide copyright clearance details and basic media management (sourcing, booking and returning tapes to the library).
  • Undertake project work and contribute to network news output as required.
  • Exercise excellent editorial judgement and provide editorial guidance to colleagues with less experience, maintaining professional journalistic standards and adhering to ITV's Legal & Compliance, ITV Trust and OFCOM guidelines.
  • Work weekends; travel to district offices or other news operations; attend relevant forums, development sessions and off‑site meetings.

Qualifications

  • Qualified journalist to NCTJ level or equivalent, with a minimum three years of experience in a broadcast newsroom or equivalent; or extensive experience in a multi‑media news operation.
  • Demonstrated skills in creative journalism, editorially and visually, delivering engaging content for a multi‑platform audience.
  • Thorough knowledge of journalism compliance, the Ofcom Code, privacy legislation and health and safety law; able to make informed decisions confidently and to tight deadlines.
  • Fully qualified NCTJ, BJTC or equivalent experience.
  • Strong knowledge of media law & compliance and the ability to exercise excellent editorial judgement.
  • Proven track record of producing, sourcing or planning excellent content to deadline and under pressure.
  • Experience of successfully coaching, managing and motivating others.
  • Experience of delivering innovation across all media platforms.
  • Reputation for using a creative approach whilst displaying sound journalistic ability.
  • Commitment to D,E & I.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Self‑motivated and quick thinking with strong decisive decision‑making skills.
