The Role
This role is a key part of the GMB programme making team. You will be a multi‑skilled producer with the ability to work on both newsgathering and story production. You’ll have the ability to take control of stories from inception to transmission.
The role is primarily newsroom based, but will also incorporate some work in the field.
You will work both day and night shifts. The role may also be used for cover at Deputy Content Editor level.
Key Responsibilities
- Taking ownership of programme items including packages, live reports and graphics
- Able to find and book high quality guests on a range of stories
- Writing detailed briefs for presenters and reporters
- Script writing for intros, bulletins, headlines and trails
- Setting up and producing on the day stories
- Contributing and researching story ideas and planning stories for broadcast
- Video editing elements of packages, underlays and headlines
- Commissioning graphics from designers or creating them using templates
- Researching and selecting archive
- Sourcing and logging video and stills
- On occasion acting as a field producer for both planned and breaking news stories
- Make informed legal judgements
- Knowledge of duty of care issues and capable of dealing sensitively with guests
- Demonstrate an understanding of social media
Key Requirements
- Ability to build strong working relationships
- Ability to prioritise and manage a wide range of tasks effectively
- Excellent journalistic judgement and knowledge of news and current affairs
- A good understanding of how to construct a TV news package
- Ability to edit video to a high standard
- A basic understanding of TV graphics and how to write them and work with a designer
- An ability to write clear accurate news copy
- A strong understanding of the GMB brand
- A commitment to creating news and magazine coverage that reflects the diversity of Britain’s communities
- Good knowledge of Ofcom regulations, the ITN compliance manual and legal requirements and health and safety requirements
- Able to work a mix of day and night shifts
- Driving licence desirable though not essential
