The Role

This role will work on GMB. This role involves regular night working.

To produce dynamic and innovative programmes of the highest editorial and technical quality for GMB.

On a day-to-day basis these roles are the operational leaders at the heart of the newsroom putting together the daily programme and outputting it from the gallery.

Content Editors should have a strong breadth of experience and understanding of making and delivering impactful news and magazine programmes.

This role requires a journalist with sound judgement of the GMB agenda and the ability to motivate both input and output teams in a creative and disciplined manner in a fast-paced deadline driven environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Generating Programme running orders making key editorial judgements to provide an appropriate mix of stories and live guests for the GMB programme
  • Generating original story ideas and treatments
  • Compiling and refining the running orders
  • Deciding programme headlines, teases, coming ups and trails
  • Present daily editorial plans to GMB teams
  • Brief Correspondents, News Desks and Presenters on the programme content and their role in it
  • Overall responsibility for transmission from the gallery
  • Making a final check of scripts and packages prior to transmission
  • Making decisions on news values, legal issues, taste and decency
  • Maintaining an overview of programme timing
  • Making decisions about changes to the running order during transmission
  • Making the final call on whether an element or story runs in a GMB show
  • Confidently making decisions around legal issues, taste and decency, and demonstrate a good understanding of the right decisions to elevate
  • Ability to act as Content Editor News as required
  • Ensure our programmes reflect the diversity of our audience through a balanced mix of reporters and contributors covering stories that connect with our viewers
  • To line manage colleagues across the Newsroom, taking on all mentoring, development, pastoral, appraisals and other duties
  • Work closely with all parts of the ITV News operation, ensuring there is close co-operation, understanding and creative cross-promotion

  • Key Requirements
  • A lively, creative and dynamic leader with excellent people management skills and the ability to work well in a team
  • A good communicator with a strong ability to solve problems and to brief and lead colleagues in the newsroom and in the field
  • A strong knowledge of the news agenda for GMB.
  • A strong understanding of GMB, including a good grasp of which stories would work best as a package or live or an interview or debate
  • An excellent grasp of the techniques of using video to tell stories
  • Ability to video edit
  • A good knowledge of Graphics and an understanding of how they can add value to stories and coverage
  • An excellent understanding of the importance of diversity in our programmes
  • Strong awareness of health and safety protocols and an ability to dynamically risk assess
  • Strong awareness of relevant legal and compliance regulations
  • Good knowledge of Ofcom regulations and the ITN compliance manual
  • Awareness of Health and Safety requirements
  • Awareness and understanding of the financial implications of all decision making
  • An understanding of personal responsibility for cross-company cooperation within both ITN and ITV
