Content Editor, ITV News (Perm/FTC/Attachments)

We are looking for candidates with strong journalistic qualities to join our growing news team.

This is a crucial role, commissioning and overseeing the delivery of content for ITV News across all its platforms. This role includes opportunities to work across Newsgathering, ITVX, ITV News programmes, ITV News digital, and special projects. On a day-to-day basis these roles are the operational leaders at the heart of the newsrooms assigning resources and driving our coverage.

This role requires a journalist with strong news judgment and the ability to motivate both input and output teams in a creative yet disciplined manner, while working effectively in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.

Content Editors should have a strong breadth of experience and understanding of newsgathering and ITV News coverage platforms although expertise in all is not a pre-requisite. Content Editors may have a substantive platform or shift they work across more than others – but flexibility is a key part of the role.

Some of these roles will be offered on a fixed-term/attachment basis for an initial period of up to six months. We are keen to understand which areas of the newsroom best align with your existing skills and experience, so please ensure this information is included in your application.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Proven experience of producing or planning impactful, high-quality and distinctive News content to deadlines and under pressure
  • When News Editing, select stories for coverage, assign resources to them, manage daily spend.
  • When Editing TV programmes or ITVX content – to generate content, making key judgements to provide an appropriate mix of stories for our programmes and platforms.
  • To output ITV News programmes in the gallery – working closely with presenters and Gallery teams.
  • To be able to make the final call on whether an element or a story runs in a particular programme.
  • When Digital Editing to lead coverage on our website, selecting stories and assigning resources.
  • Hold team meetings, brief Reporters and Correspondents, News Desks and Newscasters about content on the platform and their role in it.
  • Leading on innovative and creative ways to tell stories on all ITV News platforms.
  • Confidently make decisions around legal issues, taste and decency, and demonstrate a good understanding of the right decisions to escalate.
  • Ensure our programmes reflect the diversity of our audience through a balanced mix of reporters and contributors covering stories that connect with our viewers.
  • To line manage colleagues across the Newsroom, taking on all mentoring, development, pastoral, appraisals and other duties.
  • Work closely with all parts of the ITV News operation, ensuring there is close co-operation, understanding and creative cross-promotion of all ITV platforms

Key Requirements:

  • A creative and dynamic leader with excellent people management skills and the ability to work well in a team
  • A good communicator with a strong ability to solve problems and to brief and lead colleagues in the newsroom and in the field
  • A strong knowledge of the news agenda – including a good understanding of key political, financial and international news together with a feel for human interest stories
  • A strong understanding of ITV News brands, including a good grasp of which stories would work best on a particular programme or platform
  • An excellent grasp of the techniques of using video to tell stories
  • A good knowledge of Graphics and an understanding of how they can add value to stories and coverage
  • A strong knowledge of ITV News key software and workflows
  • An excellent understanding of the importance of diversity in our programmes
  • Strong awareness of health and safety protocols and an ability to dynamically risk assess
  • Strong awareness of all relevant legal and compliance regulations that affect our output
