The Department

The firm has a well-established Children and Family Law department with a strong reputation for sensitive, client-focused representation. The team advises and represents clients across a broad range of family matters, including children law, care proceedings, domestic abuse, protective injunctions and complex family disputes. The department is particularly noted for its commitment to supporting vulnerable clients and providing clear, practical advice at difficult times.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone looking for an administrative role assisting in preparing files for legal aid billing within a busy legal aid family law team. Training will be provided in preparing files for legal aid billing processes, case management procedures and the administrative requirements involved in supporting publicly funded family law matters. This is a junior administrative billing role within a legal aid family law department. Previous legal aid, billing, accounting or finance qualifications are not required, as full training will be provided.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assisting with the preparation and processing of legal aid bills for family law matters
  • Checking billing information, attendance notes, disbursements and supporting documents for accuracy
  • Updating case management systems, billing records and Legal Aid Agency-related information
  • Supporting fee earners with administrative steps required to progress billing and file closure
  • Liaising with colleagues, counsel, experts and costs draftspeople where required to obtain billing information
  • Helping to ensure files are organised, compliant and ready for submission or review
  • Assisting with monthly billing tasks, controlled work administration and other legal aid reporting requirements
  • Ensuring billing and administrative tasks are completed accurately, confidentially and within deadlines.

  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy
  • Good organisational skills and the ability to manage routine deadlines
  • Confident using Microsoft Office and Excel and willing to learn legal case management and billing systems
  • Comfortable working with figures, dates, documents and file records
  • A professional and confidential approach when dealing with sensitive family law matters
  • Reliable, proactive and keen to learn
  • Previous office or administrative experience is helpful but not essential
  • Experience in legal aid, family law, billing is not required as training will be provided
