Responsibilities
- Facilitate, lead and participate in Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) studies including HAZID, HAZOP and LOPA, delegate and track progress through to completion of actions and recommendations, and chair HAZOP LOPA close‑out meetings.
- Lead technical safety reviews.
- Support creation of basis of safety documentation.
- Apply IEC 61508 and IEC 61511 throughout the design cycle – analysis, design, implementation, operation and maintenance.
- Lead the development of a Functional Safety Management (FSM) plan, encompassing FSA stages 1 through 5.
- Mentor and manage a small team of safety engineers.
- Conduct semi‑annual training and competence reviews of the Product Safety Team.
- Lead the development of process safety management framework(s).
- Create and review Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS) proof‑test procedures.
- Perform quantitative risk analysis (QRA) reviews – Safety Integrity Level (SIL) verification calculations.
- Improve process/functional safety awareness across the company through internal training, guidance and mentoring of colleagues in Design.
Qualifications
- Chartered status or actively seeking it (e.g. IChemE).
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience as a process/functional safety engineer in the hydrogen, chemicals or industrial gases industry.
- Certified functional safety engineer (e.g. FS Engineer, TÜV).
- Experience managing and chairing HAZOP and LOPA studies.
- Knowledge of essential gases (hydrogen and oxygen) and explosive atmosphere regulations (IEC 60079, ATEX/DSEAR).
- Experience with hazardous area classification tools such as Phast and Quadvent.
- Understanding of UK and EU safety and compliance legislation.
- Proficient in QRA reviews – SIL verification using reliability block diagrams, fault tree analysis, etc.
- Project execution experience.
- Knowledge of ISO 22734 electrolyser standard (advantage).
- Ability to work within a Quality Management System (e.g. ISO 9001, ISO 45001).
- Experience with engineering best practice in a matrix organisation.
- Strong organisational and documentation skills.
- Ability to influence cross‑functional teams for on‑time delivery.
- Excellent communication skills for all levels, including executive and regulatory interactions.
