This is a genuinely exciting time to join the Matalan account at ITG on an initial 12 month fixed term contract. At its heart, this is a hands-on writing role. You'll be answering briefs and producing copy across a wide range of channels. What makes this role particularly interesting is that the brand is undergoing a significant reposition, moving toward a style-led fashion and lifestyle editorial direction, and the tone of voice is being actively developed to reflect that shift. You’ll be coming in at an early stage of that journey, which means real creative ownership. You’ll take emerging TOV principles and run with them, apply them to new briefs, and help shape what the brand sounds like as you go. You’ll be the day-to-day custodian of the Matalan brand voice at ITG, working across a broad range of channels and touchpoints with other writers, designers, art directors, client services, clients and external creative agencies.
What you’ll be doing:
- Writing engaging, on-brand copy across multiple channels, including product and commerce copy, above-the-line advertising, CRM and social, and point-of-sale.
- Taking early-stage TOV principles and applying them proactively to live briefs, building out examples and establishing the brand voice in practice.
- Owning and evolving the Matalan TOV in collaboration with the client, ensuring consistency, relevance, and quality across all outputs.
- Sub-editing and proofreading copy (your own and others’) to ensure accuracy and adherence to guidelines.
- Developing TOV tools, guidelines, and training materials for writers, marketers, and client teams.
- Running tone of voice workshops and briefing sessions as needed.
- Staying across competitor activity, fashion and retail trends, and the wider cultural conversation relevant to the brand.
- Managing your workload across multiple concurrent projects, hitting deadlines without compromising quality.
Requirements:
- A strong writer with a background in fashion, style, or editorial. You understand how to write with authority and personality in this space.
- Experience applying or developing a brand tone of voice, ideally within a retail or lifestyle context.
- Comfortable working with ambiguity: you can take a loosely defined brief or an early-stage creative direction and make confident, considered decisions.
- Meticulous attention to detail, with solid sub-editing and proofreading skills.
- Organised and self-sufficient. You manage multiple projects independently and flag issues early.
- A good listener and clear communicator, able to interpret client needs and translate them into compelling creative work.
- An understanding of how copy works across digital channels, from email and social to e-commerce.
Benefits:
- Time off that works for you — 25 days' holiday + bank holidays, a paid Wellbeing Day, flexible bank holidays to honour cultural or religious observances, and the option to buy or carry over up to 5 extra days.
- Flexibility & lifestyle — Smart Working with up to 40% from home, and after 12 months, the option to work from abroad for up to 90 days a year.
- Family & life milestones — Enhanced family friendly leave, 3 extra days for your wedding/honeymoon, and an Employee Assistance Programme whenever you need support.
- Financial perks — Pension scheme, Corporate Medical Cash Plan, electric car salary sacrifice scheme, and tax-efficient payroll giving to your favourite charities.
- Growth & recognition — Funding for professional qualifications, monthly Employee of the Month awards (£250 bonus), and referral bonuses of up to £1,500.
- Community & wellbeing — Regular Wellbeing Workshops, 30+ Wellbeing Champions, a paid Volunteer Day, and an online perks platform with discounts on top brands, days out, and gym memberships.
