We are looking to recruit a talented and enthusiastic person to join our highly successful and inclusive Sixth Form College. The successful candidate will be a committed, inspirational and dynamic individual with a passion for teaching. We are looking to appoint a permanent Teacher of Functional Skills English and Maths. The successful candidate will be part of the Support for Learning team that delivers responsive and effective teaching and support to students with SEND.

The main purpose of the job role is to teach Functional Skills English and Maths (Entry Level – Level 2) to students with additional needs who struggle to access full‑time education, with the aim of integrating them back into education. These learners are at risk of becoming NEET. Teaching will be delivered to one or more students, in the classroom, and on a one‑to‑one or small group basis. In addition, the post holder will be a tutor and keyworker for a number of students with high needs.

Key Responsibilities
  • Deliver high quality courses and successful learning outcomes for students.
  • Teaching groups at all levels and across the range of courses offered within the curriculum area, including the preparation and marking involved in each course and the provision of tutorial support.
  • Motivating students of all abilities to achieve their potential.
  • Preparing detailed schemes of work and course materials to support student learning.
  • Undertaking the internal assessment of coursework of those students entered for examination courses, as required by the examination boards involved.
  • Encouraging independent learning through the setting of appropriate homework tasks.
  • Promoting safeguarding and welfare of children and vulnerable adults.
  • Ensuring all students are treated fairly, without discrimination and promoting diversity.
  • Providing regular, frequent and constructive feedback to students on their progress.
  • Maintaining records of student progress.
  • Promoting the maintenance of acceptable standards of conduct of students.
  • Completing class registers and other administrative tasks, ensuring absences and lateness are accounted for and taking appropriate action where they are not, in accordance with staff handbook procedures.
  • Compiling records of achievement and references on pupils, as required.
  • Following College quality procedures and producing the course SAR where there is no team leader.
  • Contributing to the Enrichment Programme including Careers and Recreational Activities offered by the College.
  • Contributing to course/curriculum/learning area teams in curriculum development and liaison activities.
  • Participating, as required, in meetings with colleagues and parents in respect of the duties of the post.
  • Undertaking appropriate professional development activities and maintaining/working towards PSP standards.
  • Performing any other duties/responsibilities reasonably requested within the purview of the post.
  • Working within the framework provided by College Policies e.g. Equal Opportunities, Quality, ICT and Health & Safety.
  • Providing information to College Information Systems in the required format.
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
  • Education to degree level or equivalent.
  • Recognised teaching qualification.
  • Recent experience of teaching in a school/college or relevant industry experience.
  • Effective teacher.
  • Good communication skills with both staff and students.
  • Enthusiasm and commitment to subject.
  • Good organisational, planning and administrative skills.
  • Ability to form good working relationships with students and colleagues.
  • Willingness to innovate and keep up to date.
